Popularity Vote 2010 - Hosta

Just like last year and the year before ... let's vote for the most popular hosta of the forum, during the winter Just like last year, you can 'nominate' 20 plants... The order of the plants does not have any impact. You don't need to grow the species you name, but we like some comment why those pla...

Re: 73 down...

While the weather seemed great before the start, wind became stronger during the race, so I had to fight rather hefty waves now and then. And those waves don't make it easy to know which way you need to swim (they block your sight :hmm: ) Positive was the nice weather we had during the last two week...

73 down...

Early last year, I said to myself, you'll become 40 this year, so it's now or never. Done with the excuses (too much work...) and time to step up. I started swimming early last year and biking somewhere in july, adjusting my schedule to do at least 4-5 hours of sport every single week. On top of tha...

Re: Tossing a 3-yr. old American Sweetheart

Hi Linda, The other possibility is that this nursery was handling imported plants that had HVX and was planting/potting American Sweetheart at the same time. Just handling plants has a small chance of transmission, about 1 or 2 plants per hundred. For us 2004 and 2005 were the two bad years because...

Re: Looking ahead to 2011

I've got Captain's Adventure in the garden, still a young plant (5-6 leafs). It is normal that it doesn't look as on the pictures; because the plant changes drastically it's appearance over the year I think it's comparable to 'Borocay', another Captain Kirk sport, but with a white margin. I don't ha...

Oops, I was confused. I didn't make the connection that you were posting a picture of Hyuga Urajiro  Sorry. Chris I was just trying to add some pictures to this thread... Looking at your catalog, there is one plant i really like a lot and that seems not to be widely available in the US...

Re: New hostas we should be on the lookout for?

Hi Tom, Do you have the plant called "Hyuga Urajiro"? It looks just like your photo, and since the name "Hyuga Urajiro" isn't really correct for that plant I've been expecting it to be sold as something else eventually... I bought that plant about a week ago at Vandentop's nursery... under the name...

Re: New hostas we should be on the lookout for?

I am charmed by Hyuga Urajiro... but even offering it at a much reduced price, people were pretty underwhelmed. I think that will change. It's form is so elegant! No offense, Chris, but you pic shows the streaking but doesn't capture the elegant narrow tapered leaf. I haven't seen a mature clump, s...

Re: New hostas we should be on the lookout for?

Chris has Little Jay - sold out right now. I had some inconsistency in the LJ stock last year, and they were very cute, but not as strong as I would like. We'll see how they develop. But they will have to compete with what is marketed as the improved, tetraploid version, Little Treasure. I have no ...

Re: New hostas we should be on the lookout for?

Chris - I saw a couple of pictures of Paradise Island and even though all the vendors said the same thing "It's jsut the edged version of Fire Island" the more I thought about it, the more I thought that would be a fantastic hosta for serious people and casual gardeners alike. Whats not to love abo...

Re: New hostas we should be on the lookout for?

Hey Chris, One more plant that I just ordered that I'm pretty excited about is H. "Fragrant Queen" this is the tetraploid sport of H. "Fragrant King" from Jan van den Top & Danny Van eechaute . This one has a much wider white margen and great substance. While I don't expect it to be a fast grower I...

Re: New hostas we should be on the lookout for?

Thanks Sugar! Prairie Moon looks very nice, and I really like Lakeside Breaking News too :) Q & Z has a Paul's Glory sport that I think is similar to Boracay, they call it Fingerprint, and the "wholesale" price was something crazy like $50.00. Looking forward to learning about more new plants...

Re: New hostas we should be on the lookout for?

From the newer plants in my garden, I think these seem to have a lot of potential: - Prairie Moon I added this one last year, decent growth and very vibrant yellow with red petioles. The pointy leaf shape makes it stand out from most of the other yellow plants http://supermasj.zenfolio.com/img/s4/v3...
