Those peat pots do dry out very fast. You could try packing them in closer together. You can't keep them too moist or they fall apart.
I use the plastic pots unless it is a type of plant that resents having it's roots disturbed.
I save them and reuse them until they get several splits down them.

Re: Time to Start the 2010 Veggie Garden?
I looked up Neptunes fish emulsion and found Neptunes Harvest. It looks like it is only fish so I don't think it has the same benefits as the kelp. You use fish emulsion to feed through the roots. The kelp is for feeding through the leaves and soaking seeds but not good to use for watering your plan...

Re: general planting question
When you use the round up be sure you get the regular one, not ther one marked "season long". If you are worried about the spray drifting on other plants you can "paint" it on. I used a paint tray and a paint roller on the end of a broom handle and just rolled it on. Just get the grass wet with it t...

Re: Time to Start the 2010 Veggie Garden?
It helps with both growth and nutrition. It isn't for bugs. I use neem oil for that. This is where I bought the kelp I use. http://silk.super-grow.biz/Kelp.jsp Here's more about it. http://www.articlesfactory.com/articles/gardening/liquid-seaweed-fertilizer-kelp-extract-for-your-garden.html I read a...

Nice beds Gardengirl. I'm still building raised beds in my vegggie area.
For your peppers, try a foliar spray. I started using a kelp foliar spray last year and it has made a huge difference.

Re: Bearded Iris
When I was young we used to decorate the graves on Memorial Day with peonies and lots of tall bearded iris of several colors from my mother's garden. The T.B.Iris are nice for that because the buds continue to open for several days after cut. In the last decade I have found that I have fewer and few...

Nice flocks. There hasn't been many bird people here. Nice to see more. :D Here's my big boy, Merlin. I got him at 4 weeks old. He was a fuzzy football. http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn125/gardentoads/2008/MerlininGarden2008-1.jpg Other parrots I keep are 2 african greys, Bo and Echo, a quaker,...

Re: Ducks
Thanks. They did get into the area and didn't seem interested, but I chased them out pretty quick. I only have 4 ducks and they are not doing much damage so far. There is one hosta, a lancifolia I have planted around a post that they are nibbling on. They really arn't eating too much of it. but they...

Re: Honeysuckle vine
Asian Honeysuckel is incredibly invasive. Birds eat the seeds and "plant" them in wooded areas. The plants grow so rapidly they cover and outcompete native vegitation. They grow over everything competing for nutriants and breaking limbs. This is bad for local wildlife because it leaves less diversity...

Re: Help needed: Algae in semi-natural stream and pond
Since it has spring water feeding in, it will have a constant supply of minerals to grow algae.Otherwise I'd say to stop water changes so the minerals deplete somewhat. Shade would help and competition from more higher forms of plants. You can acomplish both with plants that sit on the surface like ...

Does anyone here know if ducks will eat lily of the valley?
I have a lot of it in one corner of my yard and we now have 4 pekin ducks.
I don't want them to get poisoned.
I have heard it it almost impossible to get rid of lily of the valley once it is established.

Re: Time to Start the 2010 Veggie Garden?
My rhubarb is the same height as yours. I planted peas, spinach and turnips last week. I planted brussel sprout, swiss chard cabbage and onion sets yesterday. I also planted a lettuce mix. I know we may still have a frost so I put it in an area that I can cover easily. I found this guy's site last f...

Re: Question on Morning Glories
I have lots of wild ones, pink and purple, that come up through the gravel at the west end of my driveway.Thats just rocks and clay. They don't get watered or fertilized or anything. I yank up most of them because there are so many. but they sure are pretty. They come up in late spring and grow quic...

Re: Chipmonks and corn?
Thanks Spider. I probably just wont grow corn then. Hardware cloth cost more than chicken wire and I would have to build a huge "box" over my garden bed so they couldnt get in the top. It just wouldn't be worth the expense. If anybody knows any other way to keep them out, please let me know. I will ...

Chipmonks and corn?
Can chipmonks slip through chickenwire?
I want to plant some sweet corn this year but the chipmonks ate off of every ear the last time I tried it.

Re: Use clay for creating a moist growing area?
I mispoke. I called mine a bog because I started out with just a tub buried with soil up to about 4 inches from the top and I had standing water on top. The mosquitos were a problem and when I put minnows in it I didn't notice the water dry up on top during August and the fish died. I drilled the ho...

Re: Use clay for creating a moist growing area?
Kitty litter clay wont work to hold the water. The type of clay they use for ponds that will hold water is Sodium Bentonite Clay. I don't know where you could get it in small quantities. I made a small bog area by burying a 50 gallon sized plastic storage bin that I poked holes in the sides about 6-...
