:o TSP (trisodium phosphate) can cause severe eye damage, burn exposed skin, damage some metals, etch ceramic tile, clean masonry, stain wood and degloss paint...not to mention phosphate damage to the environment. Think I'll stick with the aforementioned bleach, ammonia or alcohol treatments. Like C...

I'm glad I asked and will change the way I handle any mail order plants I may get in the future. I have never had any problems either, but I haven't gotten bare root hosta since 2001 and I suspect things were "safer" then. Thanks, Chris, and I'm also betting there are many folks who soak new plants ...

I have a question that I don't think has been asked yet. When I receive an order of bareroot plants, I unwrap and soak their roots in a bucket of water for a few hours before potting them up and watching them for a few months. I've always done this, even before I heard of HVX. However, I am now wond...

Okay, I think I'm done buying and/or trading hosta for the next several years. This whole virus mess reminds me of what happens when a particular breed of dog becomes wildly popular...they are bred into unsoundness by puppy mills and breeders that just want to make a buck. I don't blame retailers li...

Thanks, Doris. Between the wall, pine boughs as winter mulch, and the constant snow cover I'm hoping I can bring it through. Most zone 4 hardy grasses are pretty boring looking and this one is a stunner. It's worth the extra care.

If your older shipment of El Nino proves to be virus free, do you know who got which or do we just have to wait and see what our plants look like over time? I thought sometimes a virused plant could never show signs. Also, I received Paradise Joyce as a bonus with my El Nino. I should just trash tha...

Great pictures, Doris. I really like this grass and was given some by a friend in a warmer zone. I'm concerned about it surviving my zone 4 winter, though. It's sited against a southwest facing wall, but in partial shade with hosta. Do you have any tips for extra protection I could give it? We have ...

Thanks for the info, Chris and I'll certainly join the letter writing campaign once you post the addresses. There was an article in the June issue (#97) of Fine Gardening on HVX. It was good to see the effort to make a broader audience aware of this disease, how to recognize it and how to keep it fr...

It would be a very rare bear indeed that far south in Michigan! More apt to be a coyote or bobcat IMO.
