Re: Compulsion
I agree with Chris on this one. I've read somewhere about excessive cull rates in the TC lab, so the price will really never come down that much, and within a few years, it will get hard to get one. I'm one of those guys buying a lot of recent introductions. I often read that most of the new introdu...

Re: 5 quick questions of you
I thought this might be kinda fun. Just some random tidbits of info about everyone. :) 1. How did you get your start into the hosta world? 2. What features are you the most attracted to in a hosta? 3. Ever grow any from seed, if even just for fun? 4. What is your most disappointing hosta? 5. Have y...

Re: Sun Tolerant GREEN Hostas?
I would suggest Devon Green. It keeps rather dark in full sun, leafe size becomes smaller tough

Re: Add these plants to my hosta lists???
It was me who suggested those additions to the hosta lists... Baby Bunting & family has been emerging for the last 3 years end of February - early March, and are together with the other cultivars mentionned (Calypso and Crêpe Soul) every year again the plants I need to put in a bow window to protect...

Yup... I bought another 15 new hosta... But I'm getting rid of 6 that I don't like that much. I will make someone else happy with those plants

I need to set that limit at 150 or 200 or something

Re: Curious - what makes one a "hybridizer"?
Hi Everybody, Just to offer my opinion (since there isn't any "official" description), I'll take a stab at this too. Here goes: Hybridizing and the word hybrid refer to a combination of two different things. Let's stay with hybrid first. I don't think the term is restricted to sexual reproduction, ...

Re: Curious - what makes one a "hybridizer"?
Professional hybridizers would be those running a business, selling seeds and plants; amateurs are doing it for love--- in very general terms, and not accounting for some overlap. There are amateurs who may sell some seeds or plants, often just a small amount which helps finance their hobby. Profes...

Re: Curious - what makes one a "hybridizer"?
Sugar maybe it's just me but I'd find it insulting for somebody to call themselves a hybridizer when all they are is a seed grower. Go out to your hostas for a few hours in the morning before you go work a 10 hour day. Go through all the steps I listed before. I don't see why you need to work hours...

Re: Curious - what makes one a "hybridizer"?
I think you are all looking at norrowing down the concept way too much. Some considerations. I don't see why you need to keep records when you are hybridizing. What if someone decides to cross specific plants but doesn't keep records of the crosses he made? More borderline - I could gather a group o...

Re: seedling ???
You can.
There are even weedlings that have been registred (where even the pod parent was unknown)
The registration guidelines ask to inform on "Parentage to the extent known", but there is category “parentage unknown” available...

My guess : a 'Minuteman' or 'Patriot' Seedling, those have typically this leafshape, and very good substance

Re: Recommendation for Large Variegated Hosta
For a center-variegated, the obvious choice would be a sieboldiana 'Elegans' sports. But I think 'Journey's End' is the largest centre variegated hosta available. An alternative (and a very spectacular one) would be 'Brother Stefan' You could also pick out one of the extra-large edge variegated : Vi...

Re: More Hosta Pictures
I was just out in the yard looking at my Halcyon/June area which is in a lot of shade and there is not much difference between my Tough of Class and my Olympic Sunrise. I know the OS center will lighten up later in the year going almost white while the TC will stay the same. You need to give it eno...

Re: More Hosta Pictures
I'm not sure I should look at any more of your beautiful hosta pics. I was compelled to buy 'Awakening Angel' from Bob Solberg at the MW convention after seeing your pic. I hadn't heard of the new 'Ghost Spirit' sport. Or 'Setsurei' - gorgeous plant/leaves!! I don't think 'Ghostmaster' is available...
