Re: Sum and Substance fertile?

It is definitely possible to get seed from it.
I have one. Zilis crossed it with Venusta and got some plants that he registered from it, but I don't recall which was the pod parent.

Re: How to finish seed pod ripening indoors?

1 tsp sugar to 4 ounces of water.
You will have to freshen it up occasionally, as mold will grow in that.

Sounds like you would be best to build raised beds with railroad ties.

Re: Seed pods..

Yes Viola, they should be ripe if they are black. They may not germinate if the genetics are not good, but once the seeds are black I don't think they will get better. Open a green pod and tease out the seeds, if it has been more than 5 weeks since it flowered. Elegans or Ventricosa should be good o...

Re: Seed pods..

minimum 5 weeks after pollination until harvesting. Best is about 8 weeks. If you know what day you did the cross you are good .otherwise I say 4 and a half weeks from today. Then squeeze the pods to see if they seem hollow, and if a seam will crack open loook at the color of the seeds. Black means ...

Re: The Demise of Elvis

I think both of these plants are going into dormancy and have stopped trying to protect themselves from invading fungus.
Heat and dryness will do that.
My recommendation is to do nothing. You can cut off the leaves if they look bad to you, they are not feeding the plant (crown) much at all any more.

Re: Slugs

I would do very light applications about once a month to once every two months. The ones you missed the prior time will lay eggs, so you have to get to the new generation. The following year you will see a drop in the damage even if you forget to treat. Now is a good time, and I would even do it aga...

Re: Virus X

Zilis has said that Nematodes are eliminated by the TC process, so if you TC a plant with Nematodes, they do not get passed on.
I wonder if somone generalized this to include viruses.

Re: Hosta Hybridization Quiz

Chris, I think of the pod parent as the one with the eggs, the female parent, while the pollen is the male part. I would refer to the mother of a plant being the pod parent, but the term is used loosely, so I bet a lot of people would also call the plant from which a sport came as the mother as well...

Re: Curious - what makes one a "hybridizer"?

Even hybridizers sometimes find a sport or find a cool rogue seedling. They can introduce it, but If I did that I would say it was my plant but I didn't hybridize it, I dicovered it. That is, I did not make the cross that produced the plant. Occasionally I have a plant that I know I made a cross, bu...

I think the colors on the new leaves have not shown themselves yet, and within a week you will see the margin get darker and the center lighter.

Re: New Planter Box

I think Pine bark fines, aka soil conditioner is good, mixed with the compost and clay based garden soil. Good drainage is the main thing. I would avoid peat based soil if you are going to overwinter the hostas in there. A box that size should be plenty of insulation from fast freeze/thaw cycles.
