Re: Gotta vent, crazy neighbor

I have a neighbor that does that sort of thing. He is a cranky divorcee that has 2 large dogs he leaves outside all the time. They kill birds, squirells, opossums and cats. He just pitches them over our fence. I have seen him do it a few times but usually I would just find it. A couple times my dogs...

Re: Garden basket from my willow!

Very pretty.
It sure doesn't look like a first attempt!
I'd like to learn how to weave baskets.
We cut down a willow last summer and I searched for ways to use it.
Mine is just mulch now.

You get great shots of our native wildlife.
I could've used your pictures when I put my backyard habitat display together.

I don't know for sure what animal did it, but something has made off with all 4 of my suet cake holders.
My 3 seed bird feeders are all still there so whatever it is, it just wanted the suet.

Re: Sand Cherry?

I have 2 in my east border. They have been there about 9 years and I don't trim at all. They are about 7-8 feet tall now. I have them planted on a mound. A redbud volunteer came up behind then to the east and has outgrown them. I planted it for the wildlife, the birds eat the cherries. They get full ...

Re: Features Of The Overplanted Border 2: The Perennials

What beautiful spring color! :D You can enjoy crocus! I'm jelous. I planted hundreds of crocus bulbs tucked away in groups throughout my gardens. If I'm very lucky, I get to see a few of the first ones as soon as they begin to color. Then the rabbits eat the flowers within hours of their appearance....

Re: Features Of The Overplanted Border 2: The Perennials

I'm glad you started posting pictures of your overplanted border. I also like a full planted border. I like the look of yours and am enjoying your photos. When I drive through my area, all the other lots have clear views of the homes with maybe one or 2 trees and a few bushes right up against the ho...

Re: Acer saccharum 'Monumental'

The tag I have for it reads Newton's Sentry. It is one that was just stuck in the soil in the pot at a nursery that had several varieties. It is a weeping variety so I'll pull that tag out of my file.
Sorry I couldn't help you but at least now I know my tree was labled wrong now.

It's on the right in this photo. This is one off my favorite trees. It is just green all summer, but it is still pretty then it goes to yellow and orange.

Dogs (not chimps) most like humans

Of course we already knew this. :) http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29895614/ns/technology_and_science-science/ Chimpanzees share many of our genes, but dogs have lived with us for so long and undergone so much domestication that they are now serving as a model for understanding human social behavior, ac...

Feeding birds could change their evolution

It's interesting that the changes are occuring so fast. We are loosing so many animals so rapidly now. This is good news that perhaps a few species can adapt to the changing climate in less time. Bird-feeders, hung in many a garden, can affect the way our feathered friends evolve, say scientists. Eu...

The fun of organic gardening

I use neem oil to control pests and disease in my gardens but since the season is winding down there isn't much left in my veggie garden so I haven't sprayed for over a month. I was in the garden cutting down plants and I noticed I had some new side shoots on my broccolli and cauliflower plants. I s...

Re: Raccoon robbery?

I would not encourage racoons to come up on my porch. They carry a roundworm that can be serious and transferred to humans (especially children) and some other animals. I knew a bird owner that brought eggs in on their shoes and infected a pet bird that walked on the floor. http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod...

I'm just like you and cannot keep them. The only variety that has done well for me it Palace Purple and that is only in one spot, right next to the house on the north side. Hostas do well in every place I have tried planting heucheras. I still have a couple that pop up a couple leaves but I have bou...

Re: Black Walnut Leaves

I have one small (about 6" dia.) walnut tree and I havn't planted under it. It is an english walnut that is grafted onto a black walnut rootstock.
How close to the base can I plant hostas?
It won't hurt the tree to dig around the roots?

I haven't planted a new hosta bed in years. :D

Re: 2009 Veggie Garden

Oh that's a beautiful corn crop. I miss freshly picked corn. I haven't tried making my own sun-dried tomatoes before. Do you add any seasoning or do you just place them in the dehydrator or out in the sun? I only add sea salt just before dehydrating them . Some people sprinkle them with dried basil...

Re: Protecting shrubs in the winter

I can't help you with a spray type product because I've never used one. I always put tree guards on my young trees to protect them from chewing rodents. I've used the plastic commercial ones and made my own from cans, metal gutter guard and drain pipes. For cold protection and rabbits I make guards ...
