Phoebe
Back in February, a small young cat was dumped at the horse barns on the campus of Virginia Tech. She was a friendly little thing, obviously an indoor housecat, not used to making her own way in the world. She was picked on by the barn cats, who fought with her and wouldn't let her share their food....

Lily, the cat I fostered for my vets, was spayed when the kits were six weeks old and still nursing (by their choice, not necessity). This was entirely the vets decision, btw. She was kept overnight and when she came back, the only instructions were to prevent her from jumping, if possible (yeah, ri...

Personally, I think we are getting just a bit too political for this forum. However, as long as we are talking about what is going on in Louisiana, may I say that I think the "shipping out" of rescued pets to different parts of the country absolutely stinks. http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/09/11/katrina....

Windwood’s Summer Nutmeg (Meg) June 6, 1993 – October 12, 2004 Meg was born in Roscommon, Michigan. She was a tri-factored Shetland Sheepdog from my sister-in-law’s kennel. I had been considering a dog for quite some time, when my SIL offered to co-own this five-month-old pup with me. She was my fir...

I lost two special friends this past year. I will do a separate post for each of them and I am likely to go on more than others have done so far. The reason is simply because I have not been able to speak of my losses before this. I thank Chris and Janet so very much for making this idea a reality, ...

Groundhogs are easy to trap and relocate (I think they're cute, too). Get a Havahart (aka Have-a-Heart) trap, large size is right for groundhogs (and cats) I think (it will say on the box), and bait it with fruit or veggies. Now is the best time to do it, since the babies are grown and gone and the ...

Ouch!! Tami, first rule of rotary cutting...If it's not in your hand, cover the blade! :o Second rule (in case you forget the first), always wear steel-toed boots while quilting!! (A rotary cutter resembles a small round pizza cutter with a razor-sharp blade. It has a sliding, locking blade co...

I've had great success with Lime Rickey. The one I got this spring is still the gorgeous, full, lush apple green today that it was in May, only bigger. Not a spot on it anywhere. It gets a couple hours of early morning sun and then dappled shade for the rest of the day. It just glows! Firefly is a g...

Here is some of the information about what is being done for pets needing help in the disaster area. http://www.petfinder.com/disaster CNN recently covered the animal aspect of this disaster and mentioned that several of the 'people' shelters now have pet shelters right next to them. Smart thinking....

We used to dress up the horse for the costume class at the county fair each year. They give you a theme and you have to come up with a costume for horse and rider. Gotta love a horse that'll let you do that kind of stuff to it!! :o  One year a kid dressed as a doctor and his horse was bandaged ...

Annie, you might want to switch them all to kitten food (mom, too, while she's nursing)...at least that's what my vet has the brood I'm fostering on. Best of luck finding homes. They are real cuties! (Mom can be spayed when the kits are 6 weeks, btw. Lily was done Wednesday and is doing great, even ...

HVX and insects
I know we have covered this before, and I apologize. However, a recent reference to the AHS Virus Policy Statement paraphrased them as stating that HVX can be spread by insects and animals. It is my interpretation of the policy as written, that they are talking, at that point, about viruses IN GENER...

If you look for yellow flowering wildflowers, it will be easier to find. They are more often listed by flower color and type. Are you sure it has four petals, not five?

Great pictures, Peg, and I'm sure it was one of those sweet 'n' sour days for you and DH. :???: When the pros retire, they become coaches, so Doc just has a new role on the team, right? I'm sure Poco will learn a lot just from watching your DH and Doc work together. What a great looking bunch of cow...
