Re: Why would a young hosta "fairy ring"?
I was actually going to start a similar thread about fairy rings. My garden was started in 2006 and my hosta collection is anywhere from 1-6 years old. A fair number of my hosta have " fairy ring" formations. Additionally, some have crowns with tightly condensed eyes, like Parhelion, and others, lik...

Re: Crown rot in container-grown hostas
I had a couple potted hosta casulaties this year, too. I was very, very lazy last fall and really didn't get things in order well. Normally I sink all the pots into the ground, but a few weren't as deep as they should have been, a few should have been repotted into a better draining medium, and a fe...

Re: Thunderbolt/Dream Q./Dream W./GE - really similar?
Ok, now I have to ask...why couldn't I go buy a Thunderbolt or Dream Weaver and say "voila! this is a sport that came from my Elegans" and then call it something new entirely. I mean, who exactly is the ruling authority in Hosta World???

Re: Thunderbolt/Dream Q./Dream W./GE - really similar?
I posted a yearly progression thread on Thunderbolt once. I am not sure if the center varies from year to year or just gets narrower over time. I bought it in 2006, but here are pics from 2007 and 2009 as comparison of the centers. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y251/colleenseamus/garden/thunderbo...

Re: Thunderbolt/Dream Q./Dream W./GE - really similar?
You do sometimes hear one of the "Dreams" as being a replacement for GE, when people complain about not being able to grow it. (maybe not this board, but I've seen it mentioned a few times in other places (*cough* gardenweb *cough*). How did Dream Weaver and Dream Queen come to be, anyway? I presume...

Re: Thunderbolt/Dream Q./Dream W./GE - really similar?
I've been a bit confused by this topic as well so I'm glad you asked. I only picked up Great Expecations this year and don't grow either Dream Weaver or Dream Queen, but just going from the pictures I've seen online, I don't think GE and Thunderbolt look alike (and everyone seems to think Thunderbol...

Re: Go out in your garden and take notes!
I love polls...but the size thing could be tricky because it's kind of subjective. Large vs. Very Large, small vs mini, etc. Lots of different interpretations on those, not to mention variations with age and conditions in any given garden.

Re: What a difference a year makes!
That is looking good, Jerry. I took this pic today of the part of the bed with queen of the Seas. Bad news is the slugs are really going at it this year. The good news is, it still looks fairly blue~ not bad for July 11. It gets no direct sun, really. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y251/colleensea...

Re: What a difference a year makes!
I've got some that are smaller than they should be, too. They are all in pots that were buried, but I'm trying to understand what went wrong there. Some of the potted ones are fine and are bigger as expected, but some definitely are stunted this year.

Re: Watering hosta gardens
Boops, I frequently have dirt under my fingernails from working outside- but I just cant handle knowing that I'm gonna put in there by doing the finger test.
Never heard of those water meters- sounds like a good idea.

Re: Watering hosta gardens
I fear this is something my brain will never be able to comprehend- the math is just too much for me. If you set a tuna can out in the rain it seems like it would take a while to fill up to an inch. If you stood over the tuna can with a watering wand, it seems like it would take no time at all to fi...

Re: Watering hosta gardens
I've always thought worrying about overhead watering regarding nematodes was like worrying about closing the barn door after the horses escaped, or whatever that saying is. Unless you live in an extremely arid climate, it's gonna rain, and so you might as well just water overhead. I always hear plan...

Re: Watering hosta gardens
I water by hand sometimes, too....just because it's kind of relaxing, lol. But I always wonder if I'm doing an adequate job when I water that way. How long do you stand there and water one 3' wide hosta, for example?

Re: Watering hosta gardens
Mark, that is an interesting point about the petioles....which leads me to wonder if it's more important to get water to the crown area as opposed to the longer roots near the outer edges of the hosta canopy. My beds are too irregularly laid out and sloped for me to wrangle a soaker hose in there, t...

I got mine a few years ago, but started with one small eye. After I bought it I saw a much bigger one somewhere else- drat! It's looking pretty good this year, but the one I am really loving is Sea Gulf Stream. I love the pronounced veining on both of them. Here is my Spartacus from today. http://i7...

Re: What a difference a year makes!
Do you keep it in the pot year round, Ruth? If so, what do you do with the pot in winter? It's really lovely.
