Re: encouraging root growth

2) Water really deeply a couple times a week. Saturate things so that the water gets deep down but then let it dry out a little in between. If you water all the time you will develop shallow surface roots that won't support the plant as well during drought. Some of my largest plants are at the edge...

Re: Similar looking plants?

Yes, they are very similar. In bright light they would probably be impossible to tell apart. In my shady garden, FF always has a slight yellow tinge to the margins, and Sleeping Beauty's margins will turn creamy even without a lot of light. Similarly, High Society will turn creamy white in the cente...

Re: What a difference a year makes!

Owen, that bed looks great! That Guardian Angel is stunning- of of my favorite hostas and I look forward to mine getting that full. Queen of the Seas has been an average grower for me, I guess. It does lose it's blue coloring earlier than a lot of other blues for me, which is unfortunate. Yes, it ev...

Re: What a difference a year makes!

Is that really your pig, Phil? So cute! Love the little boy in green in the hosta bed, too. I only bought three hosta last year, but one of them, Gemstone, has been a terrific grower. I'm not so happy with the slug damage this year, however....expected better resistance with this one. http://i7.phot...

And then throw in tree canopy overhead and it gets even harder to know what you are actually getting out of a rain!

Re: Avoiding scorched leaves?

Pia, you know, I still haven't figured out how to properly water hosta- especially once they get larger and become dense canopies over their roots. Doesn't seem like the sprinkler would reach their roots at all. I should probably start a whole new thread on that. What I do with those guys, is fill u...

Re: Avoiding scorched leaves?

Yeah, I'm not planning on moving anything...but was considering trying to get a vine to grow along the back fence to maybe shield those two, Parhelion and Elegans, a bit. I know there are pockets in the garden that are warmer in the cooler months, so maybe that is just an exceptionally warm spot, I ...

Re: Avoiding scorched leaves?

Yes, we also had the warm early Spring weather. What's intesting is that the other corner of the back yard also gets morning sun for a few hours, and the leaves on all those hosta look fine. So I just am not sure why the sun was so harsh on those three particular hosta.

Re: Avoiding scorched leaves?

oh Mark, believe me I have learned that lesson. This was that same Parhelion two years ago, after a terrible storm. I left EVERYTHING,even it hung on by a thread, and am glad I did. A place in town had some giants they cut down after the storm and those hosta are still recovering...nothing close to ...

Re: Avoiding scorched leaves?

It's just such a bummer, when things were looking so good. These are established, large plants. I water under the leaves because they are such big umbrellas. They used to be in the shade all day but last year the neighbor cut down his trees, giving them a few hours of direct morning sun...the parts ...

Avoiding scorched leaves?

I'm in Maine, where until a few days ago I was still wearing jeans and long sleeves in the morning. Then we got the crazy heat like much of the country- into the mid 90's. I thought I had been watering my hosta garden well before the heat. Today I went out and noticed some scorched leaves on two Par...

Re: 'Little Sunspot' sport

I really like that. Like a mini Lakeside Beach Captain or something. I'd have to have it if it was available. How come the only things my hosta ever "sport" to are annoying all green eyes in the center of a clump. :???:

Re: critters in the garden

It doesn't sound too humane, but I'm not sure getting eaten by a cat or eagle is particularly gentle... drowning might not be so bad... Yeah, I think cats have the edge on evil over the chipmunks. They like to play with their half dead prey. I was working on day at a friends print shop and her cat ...

Re: critters in the garden

Chipmunks are EVIL EVIL creatures!! I have done the bucket method....but the ones I did like that took all afternoon to drown and I ended up having to help them. I trapped a couple and gassed them with WD40...that was faster and the dog has killed one. But they just keep coming! Wow, that makes me ...

Re: What Hosta would you choose?

I suppose if there was a hosta named "Seamus" I would have to have it, in memory of my special dog I lost a few years ago. But it would also have to be as beautiful as he was, otherwise I would be very annoyed! But other than that, I don't put much stock in the names. Kayly, I like the name Parhelio...

My Rain Forest Surprise has been one eye for three years...one of the worst performers in my garden. Think I'm gonna dig it up and move it because I am not in love.

Re: Animal Friendly Slug Repellant?

John, for all I know, my Thunderbolt is mislabeled, lol! I really cannot tell any of those guys apart. Mine is in the sixth season now. Thinking about it, it's probably grown at a better rate for me than some of my smaller hosta.
