Re: Seedling of the day 3-3-14
Don't you just love when they do that? I have a Tsugaru Komachi seedling which is dark scaped, dark flowered, 3 years old. Some of the lower leaves are twisted and rippled a bit and the upper leaves are not. Here's a pics.I Thanks Carol and everyone for posting pics. I love sharing photos and info. ...

Some seedlings
Who knows what these will turn into. They are all 3 months old. There may be some with unknown parentage as my LARGE dogs decided to knock my tray of seedlings to the ground. They all fell into a large clump of dirt. I was sifting through it to find any who survived. If you don't see the parent lis...

Re: Some interesting seedlings
Great Seedlings! I started hybridizing about 4 years ago but lost almost all my seedlings this past winter. I'm just looking at it as starting with a clean slate and different parents.

Thanks for sharing! I've been using Theo's Blue pollen a lot the past two weeks. Something about that plant looks so pretty to me and I love seeing the results you have.

Re: Suggestions?
Thanks Tigger; I've been trying to find some grit/pumice, something. I can find sand, but not a big fan of. I've had 3 days without any asthma by wearing a mask/goggles and wetting the pine thoroughly. I also left out the vermiculite per Chris's suggestion. So far, so good. Guess I'll know more afte...

Re: Suggestions?
My doc thinks it's the spores in the pine, not so much the pine. I don't bother getting tested any more. Last time I got tested, it basically showed I'm allergic or sensitive to almost everything, so it's tough to find a culprit. I masked myself up today (respirator, goggles ...) and left out the ve...

Re: Suggestions?
You can buy a cable, or you can also buy a memory card reader. You just put your memory card in it (looks like a jump drive) and plug it in to your usb drive on your computer. If you have a wifi camera or phone, you can download an account to automatically load the pics on to your computer. You can ...

Re: Suggestions?
Don't know if this helps anyone, but I got tired of journaling and keeping track of all my hosta. I also could not keep the animals from digging my labels out of my pots. I now shoot pics of all my hosta with the label resting on a leaf.. I store the pics in the computer and I make an inventory list...

Re: Suggestions?
I'm so sorry for that. I knew the winter was intense, as I lost a tree, several bushes and half of my hosta. Mother Nature is amazing! If my hosta didn't get wiped out so badly, I'd be sending you an eye from the ones I could for your project. I used to have a friend who we would plant share (rare h...

Re: Twilight? Hvx
Chris, you are actually my motivation. I bought your CD when I first heard about HVX and since then have gathered as much info as I can. I still choose to isolate my new plants from unknown sources (gifts). After seeing how easy it is to hide, you can't use your eyes any longer. I have spoken with s...

Re: Twilight? Hvx
I do spot testing since finding one which tested positive. This bed is large and had gold drop, patriot and this one all in proximity of each other. The gold drop was the only one which showed signs. On a whim I decided to test all the hosta in this bed. The gold drop, patriot and twilight were posi...

Re: Suggestions?
Thanks Chris; I didn't use vermiculite on all of them, so that's why I assumed it was the bark, but who knows. I'll try again this week and see if I can't pot a few (absolutely need it, the dirt looks like mud). I'm not happy to hear that other people had a hard winter too, but it's giving me perspe...

Twilight? Hvx
Hi, I think this is Twilight. This is one of the first hosta I ever got, and yes it was from a chain store. It never really looked bad. This leaf was cut 3 days ago, and that's why it looks a little wilted. I tested it and it does test positve. It was fairly isolated in the ground. It is in the garb...

Re: Suggestions?
Thanks, and so sorry for your losses. I felt a bit dramatic ... ready to start a hosta support group :D Haven't had vole problems yet, maybe it's my dogs or my neighbor's cat in my yard, but no signs. I know straw usually will attract. Any suggestions for a quick draining potting medium? Thanks again.

Hi, I'm in zone 5 and container grow my hosta. First time ever, but I lost over 100 hosta this winter (bad winter). Some of these were my own seedlings and 4 years of work. I was using a recommended mix cut with perlite in the past. Last summer I switched to a "better professional mix" and cut it wi...

any place, which does mail order? I'd love to find the test strips at a better cost. I just haven't found any source yet.
Feel free to PM me. Thanks

Re: infected?
thanks. The top one was exposed to frost and dogs, so wasn't quite sure. I assumed that patriot was infected, because the tips of the leaves have never fully spread out. They are almost always pinched in a bit. I'll probably do away with the entire bed.

Re: HVX in 'Ani Machi'
Man, I feel for you. I think I have the same theme going on. I have a hosta I've had for 7 years, which tested positive this week. I haven't changed anything in that bed, so I'm stumped. I'm checking them all, but will probably remove a lot of the hosta in that bed come fall, and plant something els...

2013-06-30 19.18.59.jpg 2013-06-30 19.19.02.jpg which one, or both has hvx? I put leaves from both in a test kit because I didn't want to waste my kit. I've had these for 7 years, never moved or anything. The test came out positive. They are about 4 feet from each other. Do you think they are both ...
