Re: HVX questions/ ID
The problem really isn't what they "show" when they are new hosta. You won't know if they are safe for a few years. I've bought some which showed no signs for 2 years. A good rule of thumb is to keep them in a container in a quarantine section before planting them in the ground. Disinfect tools betw...

Re: Suggestions?
Thanks for the suggestions. I had already bought a Mason Bee house. I got my 100% essential oil of anise today (not anise extract). I put a drop around a lot of the blooms. I did get a carpenter bee (I think) working the flowers. Later I saw a smaller bee. That's two more than I had yesterday. Also ...

Re: Suggestions?
thanks Pia. If you saw my yard, I have so many flowers, lots of annuals too. It really surprises me. Of course, I cannot regulate what my neighbor's spray on their land, so I have no clue what happened. I think I'll go to a greenhouse this weekend and buy a bunch of agastache and monarda and place t...

Suggestions?
I need some suggestions. I live in Ohio and haven't seen one bee yet on any of my flowers or hosta. No honey bees, bumbles, nothing. Normally, there are a bunch of carpenter bees or wasps, only saw two this year. My hostas are starting to bloom and I'm only one person so I cannot pollinate al...

Re: Container growing question
Thanks for all the info. I'm sorry everyone else has lost their hostas also. I really think the growing medium I used was part of this. I'll never buy that brand again for hosta. Since spring, I watered some and they look like they are in mud. Remember, I also added perlite to the mix. The ones I di...

Re: Container growing question
thanks! And yes, I've noticed how many people lost so many. Before I read that I was wondering where I messed up, but it does seem like a theme. It's just always hard when you lose more than one you were planning on breeding with.

Re: Container growing question
Thanks Kevin, Well, Sometimes I think I have the mind of a scientist with the brain of a monkey! I'm always experimenting. The ones I used leaf mulch; developed such bad potato bugs, I'm ready to give up on that experiment (I can't use chemicals). Any suggestions? The ones I put under the deck with ...

Re: Hosta pic/ ID?
unknown1.jpg Well, yes and no. I posted some pics of it with a sport it had in the pot with it. The offset shows heavier streaking, the mother doesn't. Yes, the left corner. Here's the close up pic. Have to say that since I divided the offset it is showing better streaking. Any ideas on that one? H...

Re: Black Hills-hvx Follow up
The plants have tested negative for hvx ever since. One plant still has odd looking leaves, more prone to frost damage. I'm going to repot it. the others are thriving. So, definitely NOT hvx.

Container growing question
Hi, I'm hoping someone can help with this, but I container grow almost all of my hosta in Ohio. Yes, some pretty rough winters. I lost more hosta this winter (25), than ever before. I'm about to start my repotting job, which lasts all summer. Is it best to pot with the crown slightly below the surfa...

Re: Korean Snow putting out sport called Frostbite
Wow, I didn't know there were too many solid green ones. I'm new to hybridizing, but would love to get a slick, invincible leaf, with the texture of black hills, with purple/red scapes. Maybe never happen, but who knows. I'm a wimp when it comes to culling, but I probably wouldn't throw out frostbit...

Re: Hosta pic/ ID?
I'm sorry, but I forgot to say that I know the ID of all but the blue ones. So yes, Frances Williams; O.B.L, Night before Christmas; I think Showboat are all in the pic. I know the blues aren't halcyon, doesn't compare. These stay small clumps. Blue cadet would fit as I also bought those in my days ...

Hosta pic/ ID?
2013-05-19 14.02.38.jpg Hi, this is just a pic of some hostas. I wondered if anyone knows the ID of the two blue beauties? I bought these when I first got into hosta 10 years ago and planted them in my yard. Never thought to write the name down. Any ideas? I know I bought camelot at one time, but n...

Re: Miracle Grow Moisture Control potting soil
Thanks for that link on potting soil. That has some good information. I haven't had much luck with MG. I have to say that I tried Sta-green potting soil last year, because they were out of pro-mix. Every hosta I planted in it (all twenty), did not make it through the winter. That was a big loss for ...

Re: Hostas you just can't seem to grow...
I love reading this forum because it answers a lot of questions. I've lost two Lakeside Paisley Prints, and just cannot explain it. Seems like some other people have problems with this plant. Maybe I'll try it again soon. Thanks for sharing !

thanks, the mother looks great, but that side sprout still looks nasty, plus something is trying to eat the leaves on it. I may think about dividing it and putting it in it's own pot. Any suggestions?
