Re: Brutal Winter-finally most pips are showing

My hostas are just breaking ground this week. I'm almost done raking, just a few more small spots to go. Thankfully, I don't have to bag everything up. What I don't shred with my lawnmower gets hauled out to the pasture to put on a brush pile. I was thinking yesterday about the spring two years ago ...

Re: Hosta and Goldenrain tree

Good suggestions, Kevin. I grow hosta under both of those, and have no problem (so far) with root competition. I have many varieties of viburnum in my garden, and Korean Spice is the best behaved of the bunch, and the fragrance of those blossoms fills the yard for a few days in spring.

Re: Welcome to spring in MN

That is just not nice! I hope this is the last gasp of winter. We had a little snow Monday morning here, but it was gone by noon or so. It's been a chilly, windy, raw week, and I'm ready for some better weather.

Re: Hosta and Goldenrain tree

Mine is the wider spreading one. If they could come up with one that didn't toss the seeds about, I'd definitely be in favor of it. I found that it is listed as invasive in Illinois.

Re: Feels great to be digging in the dirt again :)

No dirty hands here yet, just endless raking. Hoping to get back at it again today after a couple of days of snow/wind/downright nasty weather. Today is not so windy. It's a serious issue here on my hilltop when the winds are howling. On the other hand, I used a strong south wind to help me get the ...

Re: Hosta and Goldenrain tree

I have hosta planted under a goldenraintree. So far, the roots don't seem to be too much of an issue. There are roughly a bazillion or so seedlings to pull out every year, so if you can't keep up with them, be aware that you'll have little trees growing all over. On the plus side, I haven't round th...

Re: Lookie- Lookie. Can the hostas be far behind?

Crocus are blooming here too, but so far no sign of any hostas breaking ground. Just as well, as the forecast is calling for a night or two of lows in the mid-20's next week.

Hi, Ed I know where Appleton is. :D This is one sweet daylily, and I'm glad you got it registered. Also glad that you persevered and got back here. I know how that goes. I just spent half a day trying to get my husband signed in to Facebook. His computer died, and I put him on another account on my ...

Re: Finally getting some yard work done.

I've not started a thing here yet. We just got back from winter in Texas, and while I would generally be way behind by this time, there is really no hurry. My snowdrops (galanthus) just broke the ground probably the day before we got home, and haven't really opened yet. There are just tiny little si...

Absolutely, Jim! You are continuing your service in a way that only you, among everyone I know, can. We have found some opportunities in the area where we winter, and hopefully will be able to make a difference there. Within a few miles of the RV parks there are literally cardboard shipping cartons ...

My heart is bleeding with Pia's (and those of the Idiots, I'm sure). There's really no way to thank you enough for taking us along on your journey. In the day to day world we can so easily forget that people are dying for lack of a mosquito net, or a simple antibiotic that we take for granted. I cam...

rosemarie, do you have a copy of the last issue of the print version of the journal? The password is printed there. I don't have one with me so can't help you.

Carol, I have been watching that on the news, too, and wondering if it was far from you. It's just terrible. I can't imagine what the rescuers and the people who are waiting to hear about family and friends are going through.

rosemarie, I'm glad that your downed tree didn't hit anything important. A 60 foot tree coming down could have done a lot of damage. It's great that you have people to do things like that for you.
karma, that's a lot of mulch to fling around!

How on earth did Musa spot that leopard in the tree in the first place? This is just a super series of pics, and no need to apologize for grainy shots and flat light. The photo story, with your always fascinating narration, is compelling!

That one is really in a hurry! There must have been a little micro-climate there that woke it up a little too early. The poor little guy should have stayed asleep!

An exhibition! I heartily endorse that proposal, and amend it to add a coffee table book available for purchase after the exhibition. I could only imagine your excitement at spotting the serval cat. You must have had cat-like reflexes to get those great shots of it in such a short span of time. I wo...

Karma, good to hear that you are out doing spring chores! The pictures from home are still showing nothing but snow, so we are in no hurry to leave the Rio Grande Valley just yet. Our original plans were to leave around the 15th, but we are now planning to stay until the end of the month. Lots of ot...
