Beautiful!!! I think Dark Star is a great plant too, and of course MA just steals the show wherever you put it.

DRHS plant sale and auction Sun June 1

Copied from Jim Husemann, Dubuque Regional Hosta Society "Heads up to my Hosta friends. Just learned that our June 1 sale at the Dubuque Arboretum is kicking it up a notch. Mark Zilis is bringing a van load of his breeding stock that he is finished with. This includes named varieties as well as unna...

Re: please tell me about what i have missed

Welcome home, Mark. I don't envy you the task of potting up all those hostas! I'm with Pia on those white backs...can't resist them. Anything with purple petioles will get me too, especially if they are combined with white backs and wavy edges. I also agree with Pia about perusing the sellers lists....

Re: Who wants to be a critic? New website

David, it looks good! I didn't run through every link, but everything I did click on loaded very quickly.
I would have no idea where to start with such a project, and appreciate all the time you have volunteered for your group.

Re: New Seedling

It's very pretty! It looks like you'll eventually end up with a light centered plant once the streaking stabilizes.

Re: Hail, no (again)

So sorry to hear this, David. I was watching the news about the storms out your way, and hoping that somehow, miraculously, the hail storms would not hit anyone who is hosting any garden tours. The hail missed my garden on the way through, but an hour to the north it shredded the beautiful hosta gar...

Re: Is Captain Kirk that much different than Rainforest Sunr

I'm not growing them side by side, but there are major differences. Captain Kirk has much larger leaves, and is a larger plant overall (except that mine took a hard hit from a combination of drought and voles). Rainforest Sunrise is more upright in presentation, more corrugation.

Mine got here Friday. Look for my name in the registration pages. I registered 'Barndance' and 'Princess WuWu' this year, my first registrations. Kind of fun seeing that in print.

Re: Jewel of the Nile

It was a really, really tough winter. I lost a few hostas, and I did notice that all three of my Jewel of the Nile (mostly now Dee's Golden Jewel, after years in the ground) are much smaller than they were last year. I lost a very large percentage of my seedlings from the last three years, all in th...

Time flies!

My oldest grandson got married yesterday, and we had a great family weekend. We managed to round up all the kids and grandkids (not an easy task!) for a picture at the reception. It doesn't seem possible that this young man could be old enough to be getting married. Seems like only yesterday he was ...

I've still not made it back out to the garden, except to walk around for a brief period between rain showers. Two more days of this on tap, and perhaps the sun will make a return engagement.

Re: Hosta and Goldenrain tree

Pia, the Goldenrain Tree that we can grow here in the colder climates is Kolreuteria Paniculata. This one is not poisonus, and the roasted seeds are said to be edible. I know Laburnum as golden chain, but can't grow it here.

Re: Welcome to spring in MN

Jim, it's a good thing you and Sheila are seasoned campers! Glad to hear that plumbing is back in your lives, and that your garden has survived the winter. I just came home from a whirlwind trip (wind being the key word here) to Burnsville MN for granddaughter's christening over weekend. I got out o...

Re: Brutal Winter-finally most pips are showing

Many losses here this winter, too. Plants that are reliably hardy here and have gone through many winters were severely damaged. Quite a few of the evergreens are browned to the point I'm not sure they'll recover, though I'm leaving them alone as long as I can stand to look at them. I lost almost al...

Re: Brutal Winter-finally most pips are showing

It's amazing how quickly the hostas are springing up. Every year it seems that I forget how fast they come on. We had a little rain last night, more on the way today, and that's a good thing! Those spring rains really perk the garden up in a hurry. I'll try to blow it your way so you don't have to b...
