Re: Autumn

Enjoyed a beautiful autumn day moving hostas and hydrangeas. Moved one large H. Royal Standard that I divided into three clumps. This one is a fast grower. I dug up a hydrangea that was in too much shade and to my surprise there was a second smaller one that had branched out from the bigger one. So,...

Re: Moving hosta

Linda - I set the old TV up on the back of my wife's car and got a over the air TV station carrying the race. The hosta bed I was working in is next to the driveway, so I heard basically all of the race and was able to watch anything that caught my attention. Must have been funny for a neighbor to s...

Moving hosta

Spent a couple of hours in the yard yesterday moving and dividing some of my hostas. Never thought just moving them would be so satisfying. I have several that are getting crowded and I am still trying to figure out what to do with some of my old Undulatas that I have sooo many of. I decided to star...

Re: Fall : leaving in style

Nice photos - I wish my hostas are leaving in style, but the aren't. We have had a very, very dry summer; just now officially in a drought. I have really had to water several things like my hydrangeas and hostas. I have several that still look good though.

Re: Small ones in pots for winter

Thy - I need to put some protection on them because squirrels like to get in my pots and poke around. So, I will probably do the board like Chris said - it is easier than what I was thinking. You are right though, last year my hostas in pots under the screen porch did just fine except for the critte...

Re: More Hosta's

Sugar - like that LS Zinger. I am becoming interested in small and dwarf hosta, will have to look up it's size. I got Li'l Abner this year from Chris as a bonus hosta. A very nice addition to my hosta collection.

Re: Small ones in pots for winter

We should not have our first freeze for quite a while and temps get as low as five degrees fahrenheit on the coldest nights.

Small ones in pots for winter

I got these hosta in a trade recently and I want to make sure I know what to do with them over the winter. Here is what I plan to do: place them under my screen porch along with my other more mature potted hosta. This area is open on three sides. I also plan to put some kind of screen over them so t...

Re: Your favorite type of plants or characteristics?

I have been experimenting with anything that is different this year. I got Raspberry Sorbet from Chris and can't wait until I see it bloom. I got Blue Betty Lou, but it is extremely upright and sort of odd looking - will wait until next year to see how it looks. I have been trying to add more blue a...

Re: Keep watering, even if they go down early

Thanks Chris for the tip. Several of my hostas have started to turn brown due to lack of rain. I watered this AM and will water some more over the weekend. Got to do better next year.

Re: Nurseries in NC or SC

I have relatives in Spartanburg, SC and visited Chuck Plemmons Perennials and was very impressed by his selection of hosta, his catalog lists 250-300 varieties. They were in good shape - this was about two weeks ago. Website is http://www.hostaman.com - has a map. I got two: H. Robert Frost and H. S...

Re: what did you not do?

What I did not do was take proper care of my hosta as it relates to slugs, rabbit, bees, etc. I will apply the Bayer All-In-One stuff early next season, followed closely by some deer/rabbit repellant, and then put out slug bait. I was amazed how quickly my hosta were attacked this year. I will baby ...

Re: So what are you doing in your hosta gardens these days?

Also, I am going to make some home made plant markers. I don't have so many hosta that I need them during the year, but during the winter, I can't remember exactly where some of them are. So I plan to get some thin pressure treated lumber, cut about 4" pieces, use marker to indicate the hosta name a...

Re: So what are you doing in your hosta gardens these days?

Like everyone else, I am watering and considering what needs to be moved, both from an asthetic standpoint and also that some of my hostas need more room. It has been dry here, except for Tropical Storm Fay. I have several hostas that have taken a beating. I also am beginning the process of deciding...
