Satisfaction and Piedmont Special are said to be identical. Mine are growing side by side, check them out.

Linda, I just noticed the little gabled house in that teakettle bed. Looks charming and proportionate. Do you have a closer view of that?

Hi Linda,
Nice angles and arrangement of beds I've never seen before. I love meandering gravel paths.

OK then, Charla, you're off my hook. FYI the new book is called 'The Hostapedia', has 1900 color photos, and weighs 10#. Mark said yesterday it's due off the press the last week in March.

It's good to see you coming out of dormancy, Renaldo. Hope we'll have a good crowd tomorrow, the temps are rising and no blizzard in sight. You know it's at a different hotel this year, the beautiful Marriott.

Re: Arisaema Taiwanense - Huge Seed Pod - Need to propagate

From Dave's Garden website . . . . . Propagation Methods: From seed; direct sow outdoors in fall From seed; winter sow in vented containers, coldframe or unheated greenhouse From seed; sow indoors before last frost From seed; direct sow after last frost From seed; germinate in a damp paper towel See...

Re: Mulch?

I'm not sure why but I've never had a problem with weeds in straw. May be they need to be aged? I collect straw bales after Halloween and store them over winter. Aren't the seeds removed during thrashing? Birds gobble up a lot of exposed seeds when they're fresh and a few sprout in the fall but they...

Re: It looks sick - do you think it's dying?

Sorry 'bout that, Herb. I googled Red Turpentine Beetles to learn more and one site offered this as an alternate method for control of threatened trees . . . . (I like a multi=prong approach). Sounds powerful tho'. Chemical Control Lindane is effective in preventing attacks and in killing inse...

Re: Late season hosta hunt

I'm thinking it's not too smart of us to buy hosta for the name rather than it's attributes. There are lots of hosta I'd rather have now than some I have purchased just because I liked the name, like 'My Marianne' is no big deal. What was I thinking? It looked so innocent in a one quart pot.

Re: What turned out to be your best newer hostas this year?

Here you go, Marlys . . . . . . It was late in the evening during the summer solstice in the Caribbean. The evening was hot, and music was rumbling softly throughout the straw-thatched beach bar. I heard the call of the tango and without my knowing, my body glided from my seat to the dance floor whe...

Re: Moving - Dig/Pot now, Plant next Spring - Help Please

Another idea to insulate and protect them is to surround and cover them with bagged loose leaves. (Steal from curbside). The soil will not freeze under a bale of straw or 2 layers of bagged leaves. I insulate the windy side of my house and several hosta beds that way every winter. Leave the pots whe...

Peggy B would have called that an Excellent Adventure. Sounds like a fun day for both of you.

Cordelia isn't touted often but mine is a stand out medium sized grower and problem free.

Re: It looks sick - do you think it's dying?

Any critters involved there? We had Pine Bark caterpillars invade some mugho pines but they rejuvenated once we got rid of those pests. It looks like you have a lot of hardscape there, maybe they're suffocating? But then I've seen some healthy looking trees growing amid miles of sidewalks in the cit...

If it is fresh, you want to compost it. Manure from pastured horses contain a lot of weed seeds.

Re: Leaves as mulch

Jan, Milorganite doesn't go ON the plants but on the soil and mulch. One bag goes a long way and it stays useable as long as it's kept dry. You could get it during one of Menard's 'bag sales' but it may not be available during the off-season. Maybe Lucy Goose would know if they stash it away for the...
