Ganz hübsch, Stefan!! Spartacus, Dragon Eyes & Frisian Pride sind mir neu und gefallen mir sehr. Wie alt sind sie überhaupt?

Re: Crown rot in container-grown hostas
You all are much braver than I am--- I plant all of my potted ones into the ground in the fall, then dig them back up and repot them in the spring.... It gives me a chance to get "reconnected" every spring :-) Over the winter I did a lot of research on potting mediums and drainage. I think they will...

I totally agree, Boops! That dark, glossy leaf just screams, "Look at me!" I've got to find a better spot for my three DG's this year since they've grown up

Re: whoa-2nd year in my garden S & S
My Sum & Substance have been divided many times over the years. Despite that, they average 4-5 feet across. I love them! Last year, I added a Sum of All. This spring I've bought a Winter Snow and a Parhelion. I can't wait for these 3 to grow up! 20110523_999_24d.jpg 20110523_999.JPG sum06b.jpg Kevin...

Re: Couple Hosta questions.
I thought clay + sand = concrete. I'd stick with LOTS of compost and maybe some pine bark fines and perlite.... and a bunch of worms!

Re: A FEW PICS FROM TODAY
Mine, also, seem a bit larger this year, despite the heat and drought last summer----- except for my Tokudamas. I may have to baby them this season. I was really expecting a less-than-stellar season this year, but am sure glad that I was wrong! But I've yet to see my small Niagara Falls and Northern...

Re: How concerned should I be?
LOL. That pic is priceless! Evidently the temps rose a bit overnight, so most of the wet, slushy snow was gone this morning. All plants appear to be fine, despite the temps never getting out of the 30's today/tonight. I feel much better..... thanks! I'd just put a nice layer of compost around each a...

How concerned should I be?
Well, with a wet, heavy snow falling and temps in the low 30's tonight (rain turned to sleet earlier this afternoon), how concerned should I be about my hostas? Most are 4-6" out of the ground, yet to unfurl leaves, but many have already started to leaf out. This all started before I could get home ...

Re: Keeping critters out of potted hostas
And the best remedy against rabbits mowing down the hosta stalks just before they unfurl their beautiful leaves? I had three hostas with stalks as fat as my thumb just mowed down. They didn't eat the leaves, just chopped them off about an inch from the ground... <grrrrrrrrrrr> And Rainforest Sunrise...

Re: Hosta ID request
I do realize that it may not stay quite so small, but it was located with the other minis at the nursery. So I'm hoping.... Could it possibly be Teatime? I have a small one already, but I've never really paid much attention to it, to be quite honest. It's probably going to unfurl its leaves later th...

Re: New maples!!
After a weekend of some more pleasant temperatures, I was able to take a few more pics. I've already had to drag them into the shed twice and with low temps around freezing yet again Wed. morning, it looks like I'll have to shut them up yet again. The things we do for our little trees!!! Hoping that...

Happy Spring, all!
Anyone know which mini hosta that is on the left? Little Aurora is above and Last Dance is on the right. The hosta was marked as Chinese Sunrise, but I don't see any resemblance at all to that one.
Thanks in advance for the tips!

Re: Last year vs. this year
Same here, Owen. But after the severe heat & drought last summer, I'm not quite sure what to expect this year. I'm still planning to lift as many as possible and amend the soil. Some may have to wait till the fall or next year. Thus far, I'm seeing pips poking through the ground, but only Venetian B...

How does a potted plant drop 2 inches inside a pot over the winter? Is this merely from the soil compacting?
And what exactly do the alfalfa pellets do?
Just wondering....

Re: Anyone in the Midwest use Al's Gritty Mix?
Chris, What is the heat-activated slow release fertilizer that you use? I've never really fertilized my hostas much, but am considering it this year. Do you want one with a high nitrogen number or low? I ended up repotting most of my Japanese maples in a mixture similar to what you described, altho'...
