You can still plant hostas in zone 5 but need to mulch them well to prevent frost heaving.

Re: Is it too late for planting in Z4?
My experience has been that hostas divided in the fall (in zone 5) just do not have time to settle in before winter and many are lost. This holds true whether they are in the ground or in pots. In your case I would go ahead and plant them but mulch HEAVILY! Even hostas planted from containers, witho...

Re: New hostas from Marco Fransen
'Shimmy Shake' is from Alttara. 'Gretchen's Grace' is from Kathie Sisson (Katails). 'Titanium' is Don Dean's plant. All these plus 'Rocket's Red Glare', 'Jaws' (Alttara) and 'Frisian Blue' (from one of the low countries) are available here.

Re: Sun and Heat-Resistant Hostas in My Garden
For sun tolerance, think "fragrant", first and foremost. S&S is also known to be very tolerant, as are sports of it ('Winter Snow' and 'Sum of All' were mentioned). That said, sun-tolerance is closely related to available moisture, so if you can keep hostas in the sun well watered, there are many mo...

Re: Dividing in the spring vs. the fall---what's best?
I only divide in the spring. If hostas are divided soon after the eyes begin to shows growth, the divisions will soon look like they were never touched at all. When I used to divide in the fall, which conventional wisdom says works equally well, I would lose an unacceptable number of plants to rot. ...

Re: Who is Growing a Veggie Garden?
Didn't see this before. I have six tomato plants (three beefsteak and three supposed to be an earlier variety, but all started producing at the same time in early August), six Ace pepper plants, which started producing in early July (my preference is New Ace, which produces best in zone 5, but could...

Re: What am I doing wrong?
Most or all of the varieties you say are doing well for you are bred using our native H. villosa and are the best performers. My experience is that coral bells in general like more sun than we give them in a hosta garden, especially the yellow-leaved ones. When planting coral bells, make sure you mo...

Based on photos I found at that link, there is quite a bit of variability. I will go with this ID until I have time to search further.

Re: June - is this crown rot?
Hi Viktoria, When you say "the bleach treatment", what did you do? Did you clean up all the gunk and then pour bleach over the plant? Just wondering what your protocol is for this. I prepared a quantity, depending on the size of the plant, of 10% bleach solution (1 part bleach, 9 parts water), remo...

Re: June - is this crown rot?
I have only seen this half a dozen times in my garden (15 years, thousands of plants). Each time the bleach treatment has worked and the hosta has returned in good health. Nearby plants have never been affected and the few occurrences have been years apart and in distinctly separate parts of the (la...

Re: Thunderbolt/Dream Q./Dream W./GE - really similar?
My experience is that DQ is a hopelessly poor grower. DW grows much better than 'Thunderbolt' and gets larger. The latter differs in mound shape as well.

Definitely not 'Fragrant Queen'. 'Fragrant Dream' is a likely bet. I do not recall 'Fragrant King' blooming any earlier than other fragrant ones...don't feel like going to look right now as I would get wet.

A look at the reverse of the leaf will tell you whether or not it is ET, which has a shiny reverse whereas AE does not.

Re: Differences between Holey Mole vs Avocado
'Holy Mole' grows larger here and appears to have more contrast between the edge and center, although the latter could be due to location. The growth habit is also different, with the leaves of 'Avocado' remaining flatter.
