Ginger, different hellebore have different leaves but most of what you find on the market have dark green thick and slightly glossy leaves that often remain wintergreen through USDA zone 6 or so. Here is 'typical' foliage of Helleborus x hybridus (Ignore the caption in the photo): http://www.botany....

Now, now LucyGoose, not all hellebore freaks are out west! Renaldo, thanks for the head's up. I didn't even know this was here. But no such luck for you escaping another addiction. They will grow in your area too! And thanks from me too Chris. I will update the Hallson link on my site t...

Hi Andi, I don't have the Stearn book but it is certainly the best available in English at the moment. I'm not sure where I got the notion, but I believe Darrel Probst is working on one (or is planning to work on one). Maybe I read it somewhere in his catalog or just imagined it, but it could be som...

Nice. Now all you need is a black crocus and you'll have hawkeye colors all around. :D Maybe find a black hellebore and put in there.

One reason why a criticism of beautiful or artistic photos might be made is when commercial interests are involved (I know this might not make sense as a book is published to sell :D ). Often photographs of plants are displayed after having been edited to saturate color etc. It doesn't bother me too...

I think Chris also had in mind how Google for example views the page. What we see and what the robots see is often totally different. For example they generally avoid any text or links that are saved as an image but will pick up simple texts and links on the page. This provides a bit of a challenge ...

Thanks for all the nice comments. Impatience I'm not sure how interesting my life is, but plant addictions make people do strange things like travelling across the world to look at little wild plants. Chris, Excellent advice. I have thought of that and will almost certainly change the home page. It ...

Hellebore website

I'd like to invite comments and criticisms about a site I've been working on. Most discussion of hellebores occurs in the shade forum but many, if not most, hellebores can also be grown well in sun. Let me know what you think. I hope it will be a good reference in the future for anyone interested in...

Thanks Kellie! The more the merrier. :D It is amazing how resilient these plants are, and even the young cotyledons on the babies are hanging tough. Doris, just like Andi's, my garden has an open door policy on orphaned seedlings. heehee

Good news Doris! It will be interesting to see what effect, if any, a late hard freeze has on seed development, particularly on the individual flowers that were further along. I'm guessing it would be about like a late March freeze in my garden.

Ouch Doris! Some of mine were floppy of late but the snow protected them, and it wasn't all that cold anyway. Maybe the coldest night was low-mid 20s. Snow fell, melted, then fell again. http://pic5.picturetrail.com/VOL82/1561273/8668953/130417906.jpg http://pic5.picturetrail.com/VOL82/1561273/86689...

A few snowy hellebores

I received some photos from the garden and was happy to see things are coming around. It has been a very mild winter and even the old leaves seem pristine. http://pic5.picturetrail.com/VOL82/1561273/8668953/129361385.jpg http://pic5.picturetrail.com/VOL82/1561273/8668953/129361387.jpg http://pic5.pi...

Andi, the first is 'Tama no genpei' and the second is 'Yubae'... I think  I have others that are similar to both but that's what they look like. These photos were taken a couple of years ago and I didn't label the photo. Maybe you can check the Gardenvision catalog and see if I've got alzheime...

Where are you located at, again? You don't have it in your profile.....I love that 5th picture.....What kind of bird is that? I'm in Seoul, Korea. The reason I don't have a profile location is because my garden/home is in Tennessee but I'm currently not there. :???: I'll be back in July and will up...

Down at the stream

In Seoul, a city of 10-20 million people (depending on who you ask), the opportunities for viewing wildlife are not so great. But I always enjoy watching the birds at a stream near my apartment. It makes me feel miles away... http://pic5.picturetrail.com/VOL82/1561273/4193453/128595515.jpg http://pi...

Joseph, don't let Andi see those Epimediums. She'll hunt them down! Well, I've only got seven or eight kinds so she probably already has them all! If Andi did kidnap them, the plants would thank her for getting them out of my hot and dry garden. :) One more. My garden is a 'natural' garden. That's ...
