I just thought I'd report back that I am SO happy I finally moved it -- it never skipped a beat.

Wow! I've never heard of 'Little Jay' and yours is gorgeous! It looks like it has some real substance to the leaves.

Is this Lancifolia???
I think this is my 5th year with this hosta -- it was given to me as Lancifolia, but I've always questioned that. I checked and the leaves are roughly 5" long, which seems too short. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v627/hostajunkie/Jan%202011/Lancifolia.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v627/h...

Re: Pics From Today
Nice pics! I love that Silver Bay!!! (and I understand the space constraints. lol!) Most of mine are unfurling now too and I was taking photos tonight but the rains started again and the camera was getting wet. I found a great use for my FootJoy DryJoy golf shoes that I never liked -- they're wonder...

Re: Move it 6"? lol.
LOL!!! That's the second time I've moved a hosta just inches. The first was 'Morning Light' and it's never been the same since. That was, coincidentally, right around the time I read how difficult Morning Light was supposed to be to grow. LOL!

Move it 6"? lol.
I've got a mature Striptease, June, and Fascination reversion situated so that June is being mostly hidden on the right and there's bare space on the left. All eyes are up well but no leaves have unfurled. For two years I've been tempted to move that June about 6" to the left. Should I? Would you???...

Re: If you could only bring 10
For planning purposes, eh?... the 10 in my small gardens that come to mind first are:
Elegans
Plantagenia
Montana aureomarginata
Regal Splendor
Sun Power
June
Lakeside Dragonfly
Ginko Craig
Blue Mouse Ears (It FINALLY looked great last year!)
and the 10th will be a last-minute decision. lol!

Re: What is the problem here
Hello Pia -- I see that nobody answered your post! I grow heucheras in mostly sandy soil. The winter conditions definitely do affect how they look in very early spring. When they are small and "leggy" as you describe, I have always just planted them deeper. In my experience, the long stems will root...

Re: Kniphofia/Red Hot Poker: Anyone grow it in zone 4?
I'm listed as z5 and have grown it from seed: I lost one clump a long time ago... I thought I lost the other clump two years ago, but enough of the root system survived and it re-established itself last year. To survive a cold winter here (extended periods of -20F to -30F) it must be planted in sand...

Re: Bird ID? Large...
Steg, you got some awesome shots!!! I'm looking through my bird book but don't see a good match yet for ID purposes...
Could it be a juvenile Northern Goshawk? They have "a conspicuous eyebrow", and that's the only one I see in the book with a white eyebrow like that.

Re: A Pileated Woodpecker in Central NY!
Ginger, I don't know why you don't see the photo. :( Tigger, I agree that it's quite a hole! I was snapping photos and suspect that I was beginning to annoy him so he stopped chopping and flew up into a very large pine tree that's near the birch. I lost track of him at that point. Nanny, that...

Re: Coopers Hawk?
Wow, JaneG, that's just awesome. I'm glad you were both there to save him! That's the problem with netting -- once in a great while a bird does get tangled up in it. I'm looking in my bird ID book... probably a juvenile Cooper's Hawk or Sharp-shinned Hawk. According to the book it depends on size, s...

Re: How to have a pot with a sleeping hosta look nice
Pia, if you want to make your own with branches they would ideally be cut from willow (salix) because it's very strong and flexible. Willow branches cut without leaves (dormant) would be perfect. Cut and use within a few days to take maximum advantage of their flexibility. Otherwise, look for dogwoo...

Re: How to have a pot with a sleeping hosta look nice
An obelisk is a great idea! I was going to suggest making a small verson of the same thing by taking some supple thin branches, pushing the thick end of each down into the edges of the pot (evenly space), and then bending them toward the center and bundling them at the top. You could shape them up l...

A Pileated Woodpecker in Central NY!
Wow. I cannot believe that I noticed this guy through the window from a place where I couldn't hear his knocking. We commonly see Downy Woodpeckers and the occasional Hairy Woodpecker, but I'd never seen anything this large (or red. lol!), so I grabbed the camera! He's in a neighbor's birch tree, an...
