This is my best red for now.

Looks just like the ones I got from my FIL 2 years ago. In addition to scent and color, I like it because of it's early bloom time.

You could girddle it, as you suggested, but being a soft Maple, it will rot in a few years. Course it isn't tall enough to damage anything.
