Re: 2009 Veggie Garden

Hey Karma, Do you do any dehydrating? I started making my own (sun) dried tomatoes last year and I just love them. We don't have enough hot dry days to do it in the natural sun so I use a dehydrator. I also can a lot of salsa. This year I dried the tomatoes and canned them in small condiment jars fr...

Re: I had a dream...

I think it means you feel guilty about the one klondike bar and are afraid that you'll fall back into eating more, but not all at once. That was just how your dream grabbed your attention.

Hard Dirt

An old man lived alone in New Jersey. He wanted to plant his annual tomato garden, but it was very difficult work, as the ground was hard. His only son, Vincent, who used to help him, was in prison. The old man wrote a letter to his son and described his predicament: Dear Vincent, I am feeling prett...

Re: reworking established bed

My hostas get heaved in the winter and I find them too shallow more often than too deep. Lemon/lime was pretty big and Guacamole was huge, but the others were just small, as if I had just bought them in 3' pots. Hi, Get rid of the "peatmoss". Incorporate composted bark that is still chunky and manur...

reworking established bed

I though hostas could go forever in an established bed. The first hosta bed I planted(at this house)was 11 years ago. I worked it well with peatmoss and clay buster pellets. Every year it got a layer of compost and a layer of mulch. It started declining last year and I thought it was voles. This yea...

Re: Container sizes?

Thanks for the response Chris. I only have 2 extra roma tomatoes in pots so I will try to find some room in the ground yet, somewhere. I have 8 extra red bell peppers.I'd like to line them up on the cement driveway on the east side of a hedge. I just can't compost them and I already gave peppers to ...

Container sizes?

I have found lots of info about growing veggies in containers but the articles I've read will say use a "large" pot. I have large pots from 3 gallon to a couple tree sized ones. I have extra tomatoes , mellons squash and bell peppers. Thy are now in gallon nursery pots. The mellons and squash I'd li...

Re: How depressing!

Karma, How do you use the water from your barrels? I have mine on top of cinder blocks,2 blocks high, and I can fill a watering can fine, but when I attach a hose to the spigot the water barely drissels out even to add water to a pond. Most of my beds are slightly raised so I would have to water alm...

Re: Starting fresh-What would you do different?

I have a small garden pond (about 800 gallons) at the southwest corner of my house. It is right next to the electrical outlet and deck. It is beautiful to view from the deck in the summer, but in the winter I can only see a small part of it from a window. If I had it to do over I would have run the ...

carrot seeds

Is it too early to plant carrot seeds? The package states "After the danger of frost has past." My last frost date is May 15th. The bed can eaisly be covered if we have a frost. I'm more concerned with if the soil is warm enough to germinate the seeds.I I have read about people growing them in cold ...

Re: SpiderPlant!

Beautiful plant.
I can grow a big mamma plant but I never have masses of babies. I'll have maybe 10-12 at a time.
It may be that I don't keep them rootbound enough. Mine are in big pots.

Does anybody here overwinter taro indoors?

I asked about this on the houseplant tropical forum but I thought maybe I should have asked here. I brought them in because they are not hardy in my area (zone 5).They are planted in gravel and a small amount of clay. I have most of them in baskets that are sitting in a couple inches of water. Last ...
