Thanks.
It is limestone gravel. I don't know how alkaline the soil can be for grasses. There is a lot of dust and small chips of limestone holding the gravel tight. Thast is what makes it so hard to break up.

Planting over gravel?

I will be moving my gravel drive over and will gain about 6 feet wide by 100 feet long of it to use for gardening. Right now my neighbor and I share the drive but it is all but 2 feet on my property. We will move it so that it is centered on the property line. This has been a gravel drive for years....

Thanks for the kind coments. Yes it is the gate at the driveway that opens to my front yard. The wood is a small bridge over a drainage ditch. I was sitting there planting bulbs and noticed how pretty the fall colors were and decided to take a picture. It looked better with the camera about 2 feet f...

When I was a kid my brother found one of them in early spring and put it in his room. The next morning it had hatched. We had preying mantisis everywhere.
My Dad had us catch them all and put them outside.

Backyard Wildlife Habitats

I knew birds didn't smell our touch because they have a lousy sense of smell, but I wasn't sure about other animals. They usually nest behond our fence and still come in my yard to eat. All my gardens are rabbit fertilized. I have over 200 daylily clumps and over one hundred hostas so a few chewed p...

baby rabbits

I didn't clean up my gardens last fall because we had a death in the family and I didn't get around to it. The day before yesterday I was picking up the dead leaves and stems from a row of hostas along a fence when I got a ball of fluff that had baby rabbits under it. They were very young, black ski...

Several natural predators eat Japanese beetles. Among birds, only starlings eat the beetles, but several others eat the larvae in the spring.

I used a shelf with 2 tubes of florescent lights, a shop-light fixture. I also used aluminum foil to help reflect it and had the fixture on chains so they were 2" from the top of the plants.I had 2 flats end to end and all the plants got sufficient light except for the 4 on the outer ends. They were ...
