Saved a little labor by germinating in saved sushi trays--could put 4+ different kinds in layers in one tray. It gave me time to set up my lights, get the trays, etc....and plant only the ones showing signs of a root....I was able to pre-germinate most of my seeds just using 5 of these. {love this t...

Malaprop, I'm glad you posted a picture of the cake tins....I did not realize what you were talking about and I was having difficulty buying growing trays this time of year. However, I am having a hard time believing you use 409. Sorry but the dog with the goggles is too funny...are you serious abo...

I make my own 409 for 15-cents a litre soda bottle. Haven't bought the real 409 for 10 years--except to get the bottle. 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol 1/4 cup ammonia 1 glurg or squirt of dish detergent fill the soda bottle with water Costs about 15-cents. I got my cake pans with lids at the Dollar store. ...

Up until using covered cake pans, I took my Jiffy trays with me to Thanksgiving with distant family and to a motel---they were still germinating and required the 2 or 3 mistings a day, and the lids were not as tight fitting as the cake pans! T he hostas, not the relatives, needed the frequent mistin...

Do you guys remember the time I almost started a fire in my microwave from nuking the dry sowing mix? It started smoldering, and glowing fire in the middle. Scared me to death! Doing it in the over was so smelly. Pouring heated water over it didn't stop the moss, gnats. What kills gnats is RAID. A c...

I HATE MY SEED SOWING MIX.

I hate my seed-planting mix. It's dead stuff, really. And what was the price of it? Something silly. All it is is peat moss and giant pieces of perlite.---and I do mean giant pieces, Compared to the size of the seed, the pieces of perlite are like giant boulders, that no tiny germinating hosta seed ...

I don't believe either pollen or seed would be suitable hosts for any virus. In the case of seeds, it's not a genetic thing, for example.

Hi Chris--your efforts and candor much appreciated--I'm more confident buying from your stock, knowing the precautions you've taken. I sent a couple off to Dr. Lockhart today to be checked--one if it comes out + , I'll really be surprised as this Gold Standard I've had for 5 ? years and has been hea...

If this virus is like others (just some DNA/RNA wrapped up in a cell that has like a jelatinous covering that can't survive drying out ) it cannot live without a host healthy cell, that hasn't dried out. If the covering of the cell gets dried out the virus along with the cell dies. In otherwords, th...

chris, what do the TC labs say? Do they test their source plant before TCing? The fact that you see it repeatedly in one (or a few) cultivars, makes me think TCing would be more easily the culprit than dividing, which I doubt there's much of that when TCing makes so many.... I'll still dip my clippe...

Hi guys:

I just tossed 5 virused Gold Tiaras from a uninformed local nursery, and 5 Wide Brims from Cosco box. Unmistakeably virused.....real "failure to thrive", so I don't miss them at all.
