Re: Miracle Grow Moisture Control potting soil

I'm going to rant about Miracle Grow Potting Mix and Scott's specifically! About their potting mixes: I've never used their Moisture Control soil but have used the MG Potting Mix w/ fertilizer for *many* years, simply because it's the "best" thing they sold around here. I always buy in the 2 cu ft o...

Re: Iris rhizomes

Owen, your iris are GORGEOUS! You have some colors that I have pined for for years but never managed to obtain. I especially love your dark purples and the gold w/ burgundy falls! My earliest iris opened this past week and some others are setting buds, but we've had 4 straight days of rain and thund...

Re: Question about splitting iris

They will bloom next year provided the rhizome pieces you replant are large/mature enough. Once you dig in and lift a clump you should be able to tell what rhizomes to keep and which to toss. Toss the pieces that are decayed, gnarled/elongated, without any new growth, etc. Also be sure to inspect fo...

Re: Plant spacing

boops, I love your avatar too! Just wanted to suggest that you can also use annuals to fill in those blank spots and give you the flowers you long to see... impatiens are great for that and I use them all the time! Nothing brightens a shaded spot like impatiens and you can put them directly in...

Re: Plant spacing

I don't have as much garden space as I really need, but regardless, I like to space all plants close enough so that there's no dead/empty space. I like everything to look natural and full and I especially love volunteer plants (I cold compost). I move plants later, as required, when they're overcrow...

Re: My other lillies (callas)

Thanks -- I like this color too! This plant is much nicer now than what it was from the florist. lol! It's definitely making me like calla lilies! I'd love one like Bill's w/ the spotted leaves and yellow flowers. :)

Re: My other lillies (callas)

Thanks, Bill. If that's true, then I'll deliberately grow them indoors with less light because this color flower is much prettier than the burgundy! lol!

Re: My other lillies (callas)

Your calla lilies are beautiful!!! And since you know so much about them, maybe you can give me some help on this... Several years ago a friend gave me a potted calla lily from a florist. It was only in a 4" pot and the bulbs were planted very shallowly... the leaves were less than a foot tall and t...

Re: Regal Splendor placement?

Pia, I'm very lucky to have naturally good soil -- my 1938 house was built on OLD farm land and I am the the first owner who gardens! I remember digging out my first garden and thinking I could have used a spoon. Not a stone in sight and perfectly loamy soil. In fact, stuff grows TOO well for me. :p

Thanks for the input, everyone! It sounds like RS doesn't care where you put it as long as you leave it once it's in the ground.

Re: Regal Splendor placement?

yikes. I didn't expect to hear that! It is still potted and the eyes are up only enough to be *starting* to unfurl, so it is just starting to grow for the season. Maybe I'll leave it in the pot again afterall...

Regal Splendor placement?

Hi all! I'm happy to say that ONLY my Fragrant Bouquet got eaten by the hard frost here last night -- not that I wanted to lose that, but it got uncovered by something (probably a cat) during the night. My question regards the placement of my Regal Splendor... I've grown it in a pot for many years w...

Re: Ugh. Losses from last year's drought

I'd at least set a bucket or two down to try to catch water from the shower. :) I installed a rain barrel last year -- primarily to minimize the water going down into my basement walls, but also thinking it would be a bonus for plant watering after so many dry summers. If it rains a decent amount at...

Re: Alfalfa Pellets/Meal

That sounds easy -- scatter and remember to water! I'd have never thought of adding pellets to potting soil or planting holes, and those are great tips! There is a new feed store in the area and I'm anxious to check it out. I'll also check my options of pellets vs meal. Pia, that's too funny about i...
