Warning! Not a hosta, but...

Post by DBoweMD »

This looks like a hosta but is not...
I found this at Wal-mart this past year and it has a streaked division, and two regular ones. Bright orange petiole and dark green leaf.
Wouldn't it make a great hosta?
I'm trying to decide if it's safe to divide.

Hmmmm....maybe...what the heck....why don't you see what happens if you plant it in between, say, Bridegroom and Hanky Panky. You know, just to see what might happen visavis a really interesting new line of plants?

Wow you have a streaked one!!!???? Very

I haven't looked at the roots on mine to see how they connect, but it looks like you could divide it. They need lots of water!!

OK....so if it is not a hosta...then what is it? It is cool looking. I do not usually buy plants at walmart, except annuals. But I do go look there and have not seen anything like that!! I like that orange glow it has, and yes that would make a cool hosta!!

This is a Chlorophytum orchidantheroides, common name, Fire Flash. It is closely related to the spider plant. I had one without the streaks and loved it. I must not of had it in the right spot because I lost it. Would really like to get another one. Problem is, I don’t have any room for any more house plants. :(

I dare you to enter it in First Look! Or just take it to a leaf show, and watch people slobber all over it. Then stand back and listen to the people who claim they have a hosta of their own breeding at home just like it, but with better streaking and more orange. Sorry, I'm apparently just in an evil mood tonight.

Dhaven, drool is exactly what I did. Lowes had just gotten in a shipment of these (was in July). There were about 30 of them and I went straight to them and thought they were hostas with orange legs. I should have bought some of them - they would make a great complementary plant.

I assume they are not hardy enough for outdoors. I'd love to put it in the yard.

No, not hardy at all. Here's a pic of what 40* did to mine when I put it out in the spring.

Here's what it looked like yesterday. It needs repotted really bad. Not sure if I should do that now or wait till spring. Last year when I bought it it had 3 eyes, now it has 4, but the roots are coming out of the pot about 3".
The blacken tips of the leaves is caused by not enough water.

So I take it that this is not an outdoor plant? Lowes had them outdoors.

It's a house plant. I take most mine outside for the spring, summer and fall, but a bit early for this one.

I haven't seen it flower, I thought it would this year.
Did you separate that streaky eye?

No, I want to separate it but I don't know if that is likely to kill it. I might wash all the dirt off and look for a clear separation point if I don't find an answer somewhere else.
