Does this make sense to you? I have what I know is Blue Angel in the front yard. In the am it's shaded by a tree and starts getting filtered light about noon and direct sun from 2-5 pm. It's probably 4 years old and 5' wide by 15" tall. The leaves are about 10" long x 6" wide. It's not sunburned at all.
There's another hosta I thought was Blue Angel on the west side of my house. It gets shade from the house till around noon, then direct sun from noon to about 4pm. This one is probably two years younger than the other one, but it's huge! It's about 6' wide x 2'tall. The leaves are 12x12 and it gets sunburned all the time. I put an umbrella over it but it still burns alittle around the edges of the plant.
Do you think this is not Blue Angel since there's so much size difference? What other big blue hostas are there with that big of a leaf?
Would the two extra hours of direct sun be enough to burn the one by the house?
Thanks for your help,
Ellen

Re: Sunburned Blue Angel
My Brave Amherst thats gets a lot of sun I'd bet is bigger than anybody elses, doesn't look good but it's huge. The 1 in the shade is beautiful but half the size and a year older. More sun more growth.

Re: Sunburned Blue Angel
Hi Ellen,
The one on the west side could be something else from your leaf measurement. Blue Angel has leaves that are usually longer than wide, but you mention that yours is has nearly rounded leaves. That makes me think it is something else. Blue Mammoth might be a possibility. It is a pretty good growing big blue hosta.
About the sunburn, it sounds to me like it is actually heat scorching and not burning from the light. The west side of the house will reflect a lot of heat back at your hosta. Shading it with an umbrella might give it a little protection, but the heat can still be radiating back.

Re: Sunburned Blue Angel
Hi SB! How's your hostas?
Chris,
Some of the lower leaves are longer than wide and look like the BA out front, but most of them on top are the huge almost round leaves. They remind me of Lady Isobel Barnett's leaves, except all blue. When I bought the plant it was unnamed but since the nursery had very few blue hostas I thought it was Blue Angel out of whatever they had.
Interesting about the house radiating heat on the hosta. I'd never thought of that but I bet you're right. Wonder if I put some dark cloth or something on the wall it would absorb the heat and leave my baby alone???? I could paint a big black square on the side of the house. Sure it'd look stupid but we have to sacrifice some things for our hostas, right?
Whatever this hosta is I've never seen one grow so fast. When I planted it there were 3 10' forstythia bushes about 4' away from it which protected it from all but a few hours of direct sun per day. But it grew so big that first year, then the second it grew even more! This year it has gotten even bigger. I think it was the second year the neighbor cut all the forsythia down. I just let it burn then but since have covered it. Whatever, it sure loves the spot it's in.
