Some pics of my recent order from Chris and some of my beds.

This area gets about 2 hours of sun, so put some mature Hosta's a friend split and gave me

And last a trellis/pergola I built for my wife today. I told her I did it for her, but really it was a test so I could see what I wanted to do over some of my Hosta's

Very nice! I like the trellis, and I'm impressed that you got it done in one day.

The trellis looks great, and so do your growing hosta beds! Good luck with the maple tree situation. Those roots pose one of the toughest hosta gardening challenges I've ever faced...

Love the trellis/pergola! Want to come make one for my yard?

I have maple trees, too. Lots of them. But I think my soil and a high water table help out a lot here. I have loose, sandy loam and I'm very near a river. My maples don't have a thick mat of surface roots like most maples do, although the maple in the front yard (red maple) is better than the one in back (unknown green variety). I have older, sturdy hostas planted around the maple in back--lancifolia, 'Royal Standard,' etc. They're doing fine there, along with trilliums, Solomon's seal and pulmonaria.

Thanks everyone. I have several Hostas by two maples in my yard. I didn't really know how bad they can be till a couple weeks ago when I was researching Hostas. The don't seem to be bad either. When I was planting them I didn't find many small roots and haven't had problems with the ones there, but didn't want to take any chances. My wife said I could cut it down, so I am tossing that idea around also. Now time to go finish the slate walkway under the trellis and make my back Hosta bed bigger and figure that area out.
