Hosta of the Day "Sun Power" - Post Your Pics
Back from Vancouver and even up in the morning, though sleeping in a bit felt good.
The hosta for today is 'Sun Power'. I've had mine since September 2005 and it was growing well, but I divided it last spring when I did a large plant sale with my church as beneficiary; so it's quite a bit smaller this year. It has never gone as yellow as a picture I just saw posted on the "Yellows in Sun" thread although it does get some afternoon sun.

Paul, what are some of the surrounding hosta plants that you have there? My wife is looking to create a hosta garden with that same type of look...that is, close together/filled but with some separation between plants...maybe not always enough to see the ground/mulch but enough to see the individual mounds.

This photo of Sun Power was taken towards the end of May and it looks pretty much the same today. It has some bleached out areas on a few leaves, but really very little considering the extended period of time when we had over 100 degree temps (late July, early August).
The hosta at bottom left is 'Golden Meadows' - another of our all time favs.

Guess who's the star of the show......Others include Journey's End to the left, Blue Angel to the right, Stained Glass shining in front.

Name: H. 'Sun Power'

Origin: unknown
Flowers: Funnel-shaped lavender on an oblique, leafy scape in August.
Source: acquired in a trade with a friend
Added to garden: September 2005
Notes: Before being divided in 2011, mine was definitely taller than the Registry heights given. It didn't grow much from 2011 to 2012.

Second year in our gardens. This gets sun from 10:30 am until 5:30 pm.
Re: Hosta of the Day "Sun Power" - Post Your Pics
And with all that sun, it stays more yellow than mine.

Mine is very small still-too embarrassed to post photo after looking at all your beautiful plants. Maybe next summer.
Re: Hosta of the Day "Sun Power" - Post Your Pics
Never too small. It's very good for people to see how they start out and what they look like later.

This is a pic from May 2012 its gotten a little bigger but have no pics and I'm not home right now. Cage is for rampaging squirrels.
Re: Hosta of the Day "Sun Power" - Post Your Pics
I bought my Sun Power in June 2007 after I saw it on Papou's website. This is the best picture of SP that I have and it was taken on June 18. I love the v-shape of this hosta. Mine never gets as yellow as some of the other SPs pictured here because it only gets filtered light. The clump also becomes more open as the summer progresses. I love seeing how everyone has combined their SPs with other hostas and perennials (ferns etc.)

2014 - I've had mine a long time - nearly 10 years. I've divided it once. But it has never attained the glory of some of those shown. I think the location is too close to a Linden tree and too dry, but I don't have another location I'm willing to give it; so there it stays. Picture from July 27.

Re: Hosta of the Day "Sun Power" - Post Your Pics
Here's my 6 year old plant, I moved it a couple months ago because it stayed the same size year after year, it gets more sun & water here also. It already put on a little more growth, hope its bigger next year.
Re: Hosta of the Day "Sun Power" - Post Your Pics
2015 - July 03. Mine got moved this year. I lost a tree and 'Avalanche' was very quickly showing signs of too much sun; so I swapped the two plants. It was clear from the beginning that 'Sun Power' liked being in a spot with much more sun.
But it also quickly became clear that, in spite of its name, and in spite of some well-known gardening people (at least here in Canada) promoting it as a full-sun plant, it does not like full sun. By late July it was getting fried. Here it is Aug. 13.

Re: Hosta of the Day "Sun Power" - Post Your Pics
2016 update - this one definitely likes the sunnier location early in the season, but by August it's getting crispy in that much sun. I've heard so-called garden experts say this one will take full sun. Not so!
