Origin: unknown
Flowers: large, tubular, lavender in mid-late August. inflorescence leaves. Red-dotted petioles.
Added to garden: Spring 2006

I moved Marilyn in 2009 to a spot with more light than where I originally had her and she has rewarded me with blooms ever since. She is still blooming well as I post this, though the leaves have been decimated by a larger than usual number of slugs. The last couple of years, the leaves have become more wavy and dramatic.

My Marilyn Monroe is just putting up scapes now, and I'm not sure why it is so late. I got it last year, and I don't remember when it bloomed then.
The flowers are not even close to opening, so I may not get to see them open before the frost hits.
The plant is in full sun, and after a couple weeks enduring the July heat wave, I put shade cloth over it, and it was much happier. I plan on moving it next year to morning sun only.
Here's a picture from July, you can see how burnt and washed out the leaves are: Here is a picture taken today (it's raining):

Great looking pictures. Wendy, this is the normal time for Marilyn Monroe to flower, so yes, in areas with really short growing seasons this one might not flower at all...
I'm not sure why this one is so much more popular than Grand Slam. I think Grand Slam is an even better plant, but I still love Hosta 'Marilyn Monroe' too

Don't they really look alike? I don't have Marilyn Monroe but I have Grand Slam and Candy Dish (a sibling of MM) and they are very similar.

I don't have Grand Slam or Candy Dish; so it's good to know of the similarity. Since I don't have much space in my garden and since Marilyn has already outgrown the registered size, at this stage I really try to ensure that each NEW plant is something a bit different.

I would post a picture of my Marilyn Monroe, but she evidently doesn't like where I have her and after a wonderful spring display, melted completely away. All I see right now is ummmm.. remnents? Might have to rethink her place in the garden...lol

Here are some shots of mine. It is sitting in a trough in between Candy Dish and Smokey.
Here is an early shot. Here is late August.

I was just out gathering some seed pods and ran into these - nice color.
There were two clusters of pods on the scape - the first flowers and the last flowers formed pods.

This is Marilyn Monroe flowering here a couple weeks ago. I think this was even later than normal, but what a fantastic showing for late September

When I get back to my own computer, I'll look up my most recent pics. MM was absolutely glorious this year. I guess it really liked the early spring and long hot summer.

A very late bloomer, but I MIGHT get a few seeds this year. It's one of two hostas still standing in my garden in early November though I cut the scapes last week.

"Marilyn" continues to do well for me. And when I was out in the garden tonight I looked and it's got MANY flower scapes coming. This photo July 8, 2014.

This one is not a fast grower for me. Sharp looking Allegan Fog in the upper right.
