Mother's day.

Post by ogrefcf »

So for Mother's day I wanted to do something special for my Mom. She were I get my love of gardening from. My Mom owns here own business doing organic gardening, chicken, eggs, pigs, and other things and has little left for her own yard. My parents live in a 100+ year old Victorian home. She let the yard go so for Mother's day I figured I would redo her front beds for her. I forgot my camera the first day so didn't get and good before pictures. The beds are against the house and were full of weeds, Oregon grape shrubs, and tons of Virginia creeper roots. It took me three days, but I put a good dent in it.

Here's what it basically looked like in both the beds. I took a small brick border out and added a larger rock border. Origanly I was going to continue it to the driveway, but they decided to cure it to leave a grass walking path.

So I curved it and made the area for the grass path.

Here's the other front bed with the rock border in. Not nearly as bad as the other.

Front look with the bed clean out. You can see all the roots and crap I got out of just the front bed.

Image

Side about cleaned out. Left a few of the plants she already had in there. Some violets, poppies and a couple other I don't know.

The side bed pretty much cleaned up and starting to place some of the plants. I had quite a few Hostas left over from when I pulled up the duplicates I had I decided to plant. Some Sum and Substance, Blue Angel, Undulata Albomarginata, Sun Power, and Guacamole. We are going to go to a local Hosta place and grab a few more my mother likes to finish the beds today. I also bought some Dead Nettle ground cover, Heuchera, and Foam flowers to fill in some spots.

Image

My Dad decided to put a curve in the border instead of a straight line. I liked the change and think it turned out well.

Image

Better shots of the curve and some plants in. My Dad busted a sprinkler main when trying to raise the junction box that sunk. So have to wait for that to get fixed before I can finsh that area.

And some mostly finished shots. Side angle view.

Image

Front view. There concrete about 4-6" under the dirt next to the porch. So could only plant ground cover. The stairway used to be at this location. I used another rock border to his some more concrete that was above the bed. My Mom's going to put a Black Lace Elderberry next to the S&S in the middle.

Different angle

Other side of the front porch.

Image

Different angle. The empty spot is reserved for a Liberty and June so you see it as you walk to the porch.

Image

Far end of the other bed.

Full shot of all the beds I did.

Thanks everyone. My Mom said it was the best Mother's day gift she ever gotten. Went to a local Hosta guy here and got her some Hostas. I got her a Liberty 3 eyes, Journeys end 3 eyes, Paul's Glory 7 eyes I think, and a June 3-4 eyes. All nice plants. I got me a couple also, a Touch of Class and First Frost. I think I got her hooked  . She picked out three mini's, Cracker Crumbs, Holy Mouse Ears, and Ginko Craig, and praying hands. She's going to plant some of the mini's in the little bed I made her with the welcome sign.

Oh and I forgot in the front bed next to the S&S she going to plant a Black Lace Elderberry I think she getting.

I of course forgot my camera and my Dad didn't fix the pipe, so hopefully some updated photos in the next couple days with everything planted and the sprinkler junction fixed.

Yeah, hauling the rock always gets me a bit sore. A big rock also fell on my foot when I was loading them and bruised it pretty bad. Luckily nothing sever though.
