It really depends on what the spots look like, but the most common cause for rusty looking spots is spring cold damage. Frost damage can look rusty now or lead to a fungal leaf spot that could look rusty in late summer and cold damage can lead to spring desiccation burn on some hostas that shows as rusty spots in late summer. Plants susceptible to spring burn include Frances Williams and to some extent its clones, other sieboldiana type plants with yellow in them such as Cadillac and Super Nova, and to some extent FW relatives such as Rainforest Sunrise and Maui Buttercups.

Do you have a picture of these rusty spots? That would be the only way to know for certain what you have.

I tried to add pictures but the file is to big...it probably is frost damage from this spring, the worst looking ones are in big pots and leafed out too soon... thanks Chris...been gone from here a long time...at one time had over 150 different hostas...have moved alot in the last six years and most have lost their name tags...retired now and settled. Sure left alot of nice ones behind :( ...Im sure you can replace them all :D ...Chris, remember the time my son and I stopped at your place towing a big bass boat?... and you filled it with hostas? :D

Nothing to worry about... just like Chris told you.. spring damage from cold weather
Slowly starting to go dormant now and showing the weakest points first
Against stupidity the gods themselves struggle in vain.
