Hosta Identification 3
Year 3 trying to ID this one. Looks green/goldish now, gets light/medium green after spring. Fairly stiff leaves. Upright, vase shape. Baby-maker!
Re: Hosta Identification 3
Chris...any ideas? This one is making me crazy. I have no idea how to tag you on this thing. haha
Re: Hosta Identification 3
For some reason that flower scape reminded me of something in the Fragrant Bouquet family. Does it get large white fragrant flowers.

They actually have a flower more like Goldbrook Grebe does. So possibly pycnophylla?

I don't think it is Tall Boy, you would easily know by the very tall flower scapes. My Tall Boy stands out due to the height of the scapes.
Re: Hosta Identification 3
My memory is fuzzy but I believe they were really tall/long.
Any chance you can post a photo of your plant?

Re: Hosta Identification 3
Hi ademink, I don't have any pictures of the flower scapes, but the last black and white photo appeared on page 46 of issue 14 of 1983 Hosta Journal. There is another article about Peter Ruh with a picture of near six foot scapes, but I don't have time to locate it right now. As you can see the scapes reach close to six feet, the only other hosta that I have that is close to that scape size is Cross Stitch. P.S. Tall Boy is listed as flowering August/September hope this helps. And if you look under Fertile for Tall Boy it says "limited/difficult" and that is also my experience, you said Baby maker for your hosta.
Re: Hosta Identification 3
This sure looks similar, although mine is far more gold right now.
Re: baby-maker. I think I just figured that one out. There is an 'Immense' right next to it. I believe it's massive scapes encroached in this area and that's where the babies came from (super fertile). They are next to each other. I wonder if Mystery Hosta is the PP....?
Wow, these two do really look similiar except the color.

Re: Hosta Identification 3
Wanted to add that I grow mine in full sun.
Found a photo of scapes (kind of). It is in the left side of this pic, barely. haha Immense is front and center.
Looks like they are tall. I recall them being tall and a little crazy.

Re: Hosta Identification 3
'Tall Boy' comes up fairly green (not chartreuse at all) and the scapes are a minimum of 5 feet tall (see first picture). Your original photos remind me of H. 'Sun Power' in the habit, leaf shape and overall size (second picture).
Re: Hosta Identification 3
I would describe my plant as a greenish gold but not the vibrant gold that I am familiar w/ in Sun Power. My plant also has just 11 vein pairs and SP has 14-16. I think it is shinier than SP also.
Maybe it's a weird version of SP? lol
So puzzling.

Pics from today. You can see it next to green plants. Greenish gold but not bright gold.
Re: Hosta Identification 3
Hey! I wonder if this is Fuji Botan....???? I know the flowers would seal the deal but I never took notice when it was blooming. Vein count and similar look is there.

Re: Hosta Identification 3
How old (new) is this unidentified baby-maker??? If it's fairly old - that would narrow down the list of possibilities a bit.

Hello Andrea,
I saw your question on Facebook American Hosta Soceity public page and since I don't/won't do Facebook I'll post here it is the same plant, anyway I had a "light bulb moment". Could the plant in question possibly be H. "Waiting in Vein"? The picture in the Hosta Library is more yellow than mine is right now, but the flower scapes are what triggered the light bulb moment. It is listed 12-13 vein pairs and flowering period July-August. I hope this is helpful.

Re: Hosta Identification 3
The plant is 10-12 years old. I am currently going through the old Hosta Handbook page by page. haha! I vaguely remember the flower scapes kind of reminded of of Spritzer - long and wild.
Hi Walt ! I do not have record of "Waiting in Vein" but I am going to research it! There is always a chance I don't remember, especially as I get older.
