Re: Weedlings in the garden - are you saving some?
This is the first season of weedlings germinating anywhere in my hosta beds, so I took a picture of the first one I discovered, growing in between Christmas Tree and Dick Ward.

The dark green ones opened their flowers - they are huge comparatively.
Compared with normal flower:

Here is the second one with the same "big" flowers.
The length matches Winter Snow a Sum and Substance sport:

My Elegans throws out a lot of green and blue weedlings but occasionally there is a yellow. Here is a yellow that's holding up after a few years. It picked a good spot to grow in.
Seen here with the morning sun behind it. I was weeding near-by and got some dirt on it. Same plant but different angle: Another one that showed up this season. I showed this one back in May 10 when it only had a couple of leaves.

Some large dark flowers showed-up on this one. That's Waving Winds top/center, my weedling "Bri-Sun" in the top/left corner and So Sweet bottom/right edge.

I have a bunch of rectifolia types. Some green and yellow weedlings are showing up. Here are two where the plants look the same - each scape is a different plant. That's a Blue Mouse Ears in front and on the left edge is SILVER STAR (a rectifolia type).

These four weedlings are popping up through the pavers of the patio.

I guess the seeds liked the extra heat from the patio to sprout up that easily. And it is always fun to see some yellow ones popping up

And Don, is that some streaking I see on that weedling? I've heard from quite a few other people that Christmas Tree throws some variegated seedlings from time to time and you may have lucked out on that one!Don_in_Colorado wrote:This is the first season of weedlings germinating anywhere in my hosta beds, so I took a picture of the first one I discovered, growing in between Christmas Tree and Dick Ward.

Re: Weedlings in the garden - are you saving some?
The closest hosta, just a couple of feet away, to these seedlings is Halcyon, a bonus plant from Hallson's. The next closest is Sally and Bob, but I don't leave any pods on that one. So Halcyon seems to be the most likely culprit.
And Don, I don't know anything about Christmas Tree Gala's propensity to throw volunteers, but Dick Ward pops them out like crazy. I'll have to make some choices before long. Probably dig them all up, toss some, plant some and give the mother more room.

You can tell I've let these volunteers grow for quite a while. And there are more little ones directly under the center of the plant. Some of these are yellow and some have a cool leaf shape, but they are beginning to detract from Dick Ward.

Maybe I should spill out my extra seeds onto the patio. They might grow better there than in seedling trays.

My little yellow gravel weedling opened. The plant had two pieces when it started but one piece got stepped on and died.

Re: Weedlings in the garden - are you saving some?
I went out yesterday to collect some pods from one of my weedlings. I think it's a retifolia type with big dark flowers. Then I noticed a weedling that I have been virtually ignoring right next it that is looking decent for this time of year. It's growing under my big yellow weedling 'Bri-Sun'.
That's 'Bri-Sun' in the center of the photo with Waving Winds to the right. The seed pods I was after can be seen in the bottom right corner. And earlier in the season with flowers:

Re: Weedlings in the garden - are you saving some?
I see I never posted pictures of mine. I've got a couple, but I think one will be given away next spring.
This is the one I will likely give away. It's quite a nice yellow in early spring, but darkens up and after it blooms doesn't have any really good qualities. I suspect it's a 'September Sun' seedling that lost its marker one winter because of the similarity to some other SS seedlings I have. This weedling I'm keeping, at least for now. I suspect it's a seedling from 'Lakeside Zinger' as that's where I found it and it is remaining small and has a couple of streaky leaves.

Re: Weedlings in the garden - are you saving some?
This one had a single sprout last season and 9 scapes. This season there are two sprouts about 2 inches apart.
I gave it a garden name of Xiangliu - a Chinese 9 headed monster/serpent. It's not named for its size - it is small - but for the 9 scapes out of a single plant.Ed McHugh, Sicklerville NJ

Re: Weedlings in the garden - are you saving some?
Others call them volunteers, and yes, they are all still seedlings

Too soon to see how mine are doing this year. The little one above that came up under my Undulata Albomarginata just about disappeared last year. But the one that almost certainly is from my 'Lakeside Zinger' was doing well. This one, I think might be from 'September Sun' and it's quite pretty in the spring when it's quite yellow, but it gets really ordinary after that; so I think this year it will be off to a plant sale.

Re: Weedlings in the garden - are you saving some?
I have more weedlings this year than I have ever had. They are under every where.
Re: Weedlings in the garden - are you saving some?
Ran into two today with reptilian skin. These are in area with a lot of rectifolia types.
You can see some other weedlings off to the right - a yellowish one, a thin rippled leaf one besides the big smooth leafed one my foot is under.
Close-up of the "reptilian" skin. And a round leaf one with "reptilian" skin.

Re: Weedlings in the garden - are you saving some?
Cleaning out my south side garden today, I ran into this little guy. It's rare that a weedling "picks" a good spot - it's got space, sun and water. I think this is the first time I have encountered a weedling in this area.
