Pic of the Day--Warwick Choice

Post by Hank Zumach »

Hi All--The "10 foot rule" is used to describe whether the appearance of a particular variety is unique enough that it can be identified from 10 feet away. An example of a variety that has problems passing the 10 foot rule is Warwick Choice. It was purchased in 2002 and is growing in a spot that gets several hours of direct sun, depending on the time of the year. So far it has had a good, steady growth rate but it doesn't have foliage characteristics that would easily distinguish it from other white margined plants. It is a nice plant, just not that different from others that have come before. Beginning in 2002 its size has been 18x8, 26x13, 39x14, 47x17 and 52x23 last summer. That puts it right in line with Lemke's listing of 48x22. It has had some minimal slug damage.

The pics are from 2002, 2004 and 2006. The photos show the clump to be a bit lop sided but that is due to the plant being located on the top of a steep slope.

I have this one too Hank, I agree with you, it is not a "looker", but in the spot I have it, it is very sweet to look at.

Thanks for sharing, I love your posts!! :D

I won't have a lot to add on this one. I've got a couple, but it really doesn't stand out from my other green-with-white-margin.

It's not listed in Zilis. My Google results indicate that it is a Gil Jones 1993 registration, listed as a large plant with slightly rippled leaves.

It's a nice plant... but it is on my list of those I'm likely to remove when I start reducing my numbers.

None of my pictures would add anything... :???:
