Hi All--Deep Blue Sea has not exactly been a disappointment but it is close. I got the plant in 2003 and it has been planted in a spot that gets no direct sunlight. Its growth rate has been slow, particularly for a plant with blue/green foliage. Its foliage does not readily distinguish it from a number of other varieties. Since 2003 it has measured 9x3, 13x12 23x7, and 28x10, still some distance away from Lemke's listing of 34x15.

With Blue Moon as a parent (maybe OP?), slow growth might be expected. Perhaps one of the bluest big hostas once it gets big, but…

This is one of Charlie Seaver's first registrations (taking after his mother Mildred). One of his leaves from this did win BIS at the Hosta Show our local had two years ago.

I think Mildred's 'Queen of the Seas' might be better. I hope so: I bought one last year.

I think this is one that takes a very long time to develop the WOW factor. The lst one I saw at Miller's Manor was tall, very blue, and symmetrical. Mine isn't there yet.

I got mine from Plant Delights when they were one of the 2004 convention vendors in Des Moines. All they were selling were huge & 3 divisions from full grown plants. And the color & corrugation was pretty amazing - plants were all well over 2 feet tall. I waivered [because of the $25 price] too long & had to settle for a 2 division plant they shipped in the next day. But I've sure never regretted it.

I was very impressed the 1st year it was in my garden. 3 eyes I think & its coloring & the thick waxy bloom made it look like it was coated with plastic. It was up to 5 divisions last year, but didn't look quite the same color-wise. This year I'm just seeing 3 divisions so far [& one of the last to emerge], but it's in the bed under the crab apple tree so that may be a factor. It will get moved.

Don't give up yet, Hank!! This one is definitely worth the wait!! IMO

I will see if I can find the pics that made me go ga-ga over it. These 3 aren't the ones that I'm thinking of.

Here's the pics I was thinking of. The leaf detail pic shows the wax but the color isn't quite right.

Going to be a beauty.. it can take rather much sun .. to 4 PM here and never got the wax melted

Oh Hank.....I hope your not right!! I bought me & Chris one and now I can't even remember where I got it and how many eye's they had......but looking at it right now it has 3 big eyes, up about 3-5 inches....very tall....not unfurled yet.....Mine is planted on the east side of the house and only gets a little sun in the late morning....I can't wait to see it this year....

Chris, how is your's?
