WHO ARE THE EARLIES/LATER BLOOMERS?

Post by malaprop »

Is anyone else having early scapes?

I had a list of what types bloomed early/late, but can't find it. Anyone know?

Right now I've got a hosta I thought was Nigersens Elatior (nigresens/montana) about to bloom, which according to Zilis, doesn't bloom until mid-July to early Aug, but has got it's huge scape already to bloom..I don't have the heart to tell it its only May

Also have scapes already on Monopoly (sport of Pilgrim), and what type are these? http://hostalibrary.org/p/p.html

and scape also on

Blue Angel ( blooms June 25-July 20) sieboldiana/montana

I know Plantagenia is later, and my streaked breeders are late.....probably descendents from Beatrice....but who are the early birds?

Any and all instruction appreciated.

Yes, many seem to be coming real early.

So far ones I can think off....

Lakeside Maestro - in flower
Summer Warrior - scape coming
Ruffed Up - scape coming
Step Sister - scape coming
Hope - scape coming
Midwest Magic - scape coming
Iris Frazier - scape coming

and more each day.

This is weird. Aren't those "middle" season bloomers?

My earliest to bloom are the sieboldiana types: Elegans, Big Daddy, Bressingham Blue... usually the very earliest in my garden is an Elegans seedling.

This year I see Gold Edger sending out two flower scapes already - at a time when certain others (for example On Stage) are still tightly furled up, and my sieboldianas nowhere near being ready to flower! Go figure.

The latest bloomer is, I think, Red October, and I'd guess some of its relatives.
...greening up the Great White North!!!

This is usually the first for me. It isn't blooming, yet, but has scapes.

Party Favor is early, too, but haven't seen any scapes, yet.

I noticed a scape just coming out of the foliage on Sea Gulf Stream on the 13th when I was taking pics. [Thought I had a pic of it, but I'm not finding it.] Then in the last couple of days I've noticed scapes on King Tut & Paradigm. Paradigm really surprised me since last year was the 1st it had ever bloomed at all. Just remembered that I saw today that Glory had a scape up.

Out of the ones I had in the greenhouse that had a head start, scapes up or blooming:
Fair Maiden
Blue Cadet (blooming)
Bridegroom
Jewel of the Nile (blooming)
LS Shoremaster
Dreamweaver (blooming)
Cheatin Heart

Those in the ground:
Dew Drop
Ghost Spirit
Parky's Prize
Inniswood
Baby Bunting
Blue Cadet
Frances Williams
Pacific Blue Edger

I am really surprised at the ones outside as they seem early for normal years, and they really got smacked by the freeze we had...

If I remember right from conversations in past years, I've heard that cold temps [late frost or freeze] can sometimes be the cause of early scapes.

Could be what happened to mine...kind of a bummer as I was hoping to hybridize some this year and they aren't all blooming close to the same time. I really want to do something with Ghost Spirit...would it be a pod parent or pollen parent? If breeding for size do you use the pod or pollen parent? I am trying to make some mini streakers. I have Baby Bunting and Ghost Spirit blooming at the same time... :-?

Everything is too early this year...all my mid-June blooming perennials are about to flower here - and that is truly odd! In 28 or so years, have never once had these plants bloom this early...occasionally they would bloom towards the end of the first week of June but rarely. So it is not just hosta...everything has a head start this year.

not only that. my veggie garden went in 3 weeks ahead of schedule. and i wouldn't doubt if our zone has shifted by a half.

so its gonna add at least 21 days to our growing season this year. weird.

Another one I noticed with a scape emerging this afternoon is Green Piecrust. I was going to go around & see if any others were sending up scapes but got rained in.

Just look it as a once in a lifetime opportunity. We can make some crosses that might never happen normally. :D I just thought of a couple good ones!!

druff: don’t count on it...according to my garden journals (going back to 1980) the last time we had a real early spring we lost our entire veggie garden to frost...in mid-August!!!

I'm in the same dilemma.......the wrong ones are going to bloom long before my pod parents---- Looking at what is happening is places like NH, and zone 4 IOWA already getting scapes, when they hardly have finished the unfolding.... furthermore, it's all over the hosta spectrum, not just sieboldianas....

Looking tonight and I see all over the place, each hosta has one draw-string leaf that obviously got frosted big-time during the unfolding stage, No big deal, but noticable, nonetheless.

What few blooms are open are on the small side.

Well, I'm going to have to go out and investigate. I've had a bad bug and been sick for a few days, and haven't had the energy to do my daily walkabout.
It's kind of strange that it's happening in so many different places.
