Pic of the Day--Vera Verde

Post by Hank Zumach »

Hi All--After spending a few days showing varieties that don't do well for me, I can move down the garden bed to where the "normal" varieties are. Vera Verde was purchased in 1994. It has been divided a number of times and has been a vigorous grower wherever it has been planted. Its nice form and color fit in well with other plants. This clump in the first photo has averaged about 38x16, just a bit bigger than Zilis's listing of 26x13. The second photo is of a mass planting. The plant does need slug protection.

Wow Hank!

That looks awesome!

Have you noticed Vera Verde putting up streaky eyes? I have a couple on mine this year and several people mentioned that it does occur quite frequently with this one....

Those are gorgeous! Love the more narrow leaf. Very pretty grouping under the tree!

Hank!
I'm so glad you showed Vera Verde ... It's a favorite!
A few years ago I was at the Mott Estated (Mott's Applesauce/Juice, etc.) and there was this long hosta bed that was edged with VV ... It was really breathtaking seeing it.

Neat mass planting. Did you just put several pieces around and let them fill in?

Jane--Yes. I did it a number of years ago and don't remember too many details but I think I used 6 to 8 divisions, each with just a couple of eyes. It took several years to form a complete cover.

Jane, you might want to look at 'Tea and Crumpets'. It's somewhat rhizomatous, and has cute roundish leaves with more variegation.
