Pic of the Day--Grand Tiara

Post by Hank Zumach »

Hi All--Grand Tiara is another good performing variety in our garden. Since 1998 it has been growing in a spot that gets up to 2-3 hours of afternoon sun, depending on the time of the year. It has had a steady, if unspectacular, growth rate. Beginning in 2001 it's measurements have been 19x10, 25x10, 28x14, 34x14, 31x11, and 37x13. Zilis lists it at 44x16. One downside is that the plant has above average slug problems.

This one's one of my faves. Does well everywhere - sun or shade - and grows like a demon.

    Very beautiful!

How does this one compare to 'Glen Tiara'? Coloring of leaves appears similar-- do they share parents?

John - Glen Tiara is Viktoria's sport. Grand Tiara is a sport of Golden Tiara. I believe Glen Tiara is also. But I'm sure she can give you the finer details.

Grand Tiara is thought to be a tetraploid sport of Golden Tiara and has better substance, while Glen Tiara is a wide margined sport of Golden Tiara, but has the same substance.
Viktoria was sweet enough to bring me Glen Tiara when she came to Cleveland and visited my Garden in 2005, and it is growing very well.
