Has anyone out there had any seed set on 'Manhattan'? How about its pollen? Viable? So far no seed set.

For those who have 'Manhattan,' how do you like it? Is it one you'd buy all over again?

Anyone have pictures handy? This is one that's on my list, but I was considering shuffling it down to a lower priority.

Thanks in advance for sharing your opinions. :D

Matt

P.S. sorry George - I'm hijacking your thread. :D

Barb, mine is new, but it was shipped to me in a pot, and is quite nice sized. I'm surprised no pollen has taken on it. I'm down to the last flower. Maybe my pollen is no good, but I've tried about five different pollen parents.

Mine was new last year, a replacement for one that didn't make the first winter. No good pics of it yet, because it's just a baby, and I really don't know if there were any seedpods on it last year. I'll try to remember to watch it this year.

It seams to set pods easily...OP...I think I have a few seedlings somewhere :???:

And yes, I would definitely replace mine if something happened to it!

I just have a young one but have seen a photo of a mature one that literally made my jaw drop! It was coming up in the Spring and the HUGE red petioles were unreal!!!

It is a slow grower, from what I understand, but seems to be worth the wait! :D

Ademink, you must be confusing it with another Hosta. Manhattan has green petioles. Maybe the eyes are red as they break ground. I don't know.

The red petiole comment got me thinking, I've never noticed them being red, and my plant unfurls so low and flat, I don't think I would notice them. Looked through some old pictures , couldn't find red petioles but found these...from 2004 I think, thought I'd post them.

Slow, but steady  :D Got my plant in 2001, a small single, which I remember being very disapointed in, :hmm: why did I ever order it! Too bad I have it tucked away, really out of sight, because it deserves a more prominent location...but since it ain't broke, I'm not fixing it  its staying right where it is.

Okay, had to do a little Microsoft Paint cropping to post this. :D Someone let me have his pic of Manhattan when I was considering purchasing it so I could "drool over it".

He asked that I not post it so I am just cropping out the petioles so you can see what I'm talking about.

i don't really think the red part is really what you'd call petioles, but don't know what you'd call it. :???:

Thanks for the pics, Barb! It's good to hear about real people's experiences with this variety. The "official" pictures will always look great, but your "real" pictures look great too!

Your Manhattan is gorgeous, Barb!! :o :o

I don't know what you call those little 'eye' coverings either. :hmm: I wondered this spring & looked in the Hosta Definitions section in the Hosta Library, but I didn't see anything there either. :???:
