Hosta Leaves #2 - Fantabulous

Post by renaldo75 »

Fantabulous has never done much in my garden until this year. And the only reason it has now is because it got zapped by the cold this spring & I had to cut all 2 of the old eyes back. I think there are 4 or 5 new eyes that emerged then. It's still not very large, and it needs to be moved so it has some more room to grow, but these leaves are the best looking it's ever had. It's been in it's current spot since spring 2003. The shades of green look like they've been painted on over the white.

oh pretty!

I love it when they form that 3rd color that does look like one overlayed the other

Just bought this one this year, after seeing it on the convention tour last year. Had to have it at least for the name! (ok, so it bookends a border along a walkway with Gay Blade at the other end :-? )

 Well I'm glad it was your senior moment & not mine, Kent. But I don't think I'm too far behind you. I have plenty as it is. LOL

I sure hope it is Fantabulous. But an amusing story about it is that it's planted about a foot away from Ebb Tide. Neither of them had ever amounted to much last year & in early May I was confused about which was which. They both had labels, but I had a feeling that the labels had gotten switched at one point. I asked a hosta grower I was visiting to point out her Ebb Tide. I still wasn't sure about it even after seeing hers, but then Ebb Tide really changed a lot by the end of May & there was no doubting what it was any longer. So of course I traded the labels around since it had the Fantabulous label. How those 2 could be confused in my mind I don't know, but the juvenile, unfurling leaves sure didn't help me ID either of them.

Jane - Fantabulous gets mostly dappled midday sunlight, but not a lot because Elvis Lives & Ebb Tide are both encroaching on it's spot so it's pretty sheltered from the light even they get.

A real beauty! I went to add it to my list and saw it was already on the list! Must need to move that one closer to the top...
