Pic of the Day--Blue Dimples

Post by Hank Zumach »

Hi All--Today's variety is a study in how very slowly some hostas mature. I have had Blue Dimples since 1994 but it wasn't until 2002 that some subtle changes in color and leaf shape made it one of my favorites. It wasn't until the plant was twelve years old before it finally reached Zilis' size listing of 44x19. It has become what is probably the "bluest" hosta in our garden. It grows in a spot that gets about an hour of direct sun in the middle of the summer and indirect light in spring and fall. Slugs have seldom bothered this plant.

That is lovely. And it does have a gorgeous blue color!

I dont know about having to wait twelve years for it to reach its full potential though!

That is a test of ultimate patience!

Well, Hank, I'm halfway there with mine. It's been in my garden since 2001. I will have to go out and study it to see if it's getting anywhere. For a while I couldn't tell the difference between Blue Dimple, Blue Arrow, or Blue Wedgwood, all three of which are very nice plants. Now I'm really seeing differences in the latter two, but haven't compared BD with them lately.
That pic would be enough to make anyone who loves blue run right out and add this hosta! It's lovely.

I added this plant last year and just tucked it away in a nice shady spot and will check it again in ten years Hank.

Oh my , Hank! That one is stunning! Mine is not anywhere near that large and impressive, but after hearing how long you had to wait for yours to show it's stuff, then I guess I have quite a few more years to go. :???:

Hi All--Thanks for all the nice comments. :D

Joan--I'm glad you posted your pic. It shows how the plant will change over the years. Yours is a nice looking plant but it looks like a different variety compared to when it finally hits maturity.
