Pic of the Day--Barbara Ann ?

Hi All--I received today's plant from England in 2002 with the name listed as 'Barbara Ann'. I assume there are only a few of these plants growing in the States. The Hosta Library describes Barbara Ann as a white edged, large sized sport of Elegans. My white edged plant certainly does not match that size description and the plant Tim Saville is growing (the only other example I'm aware of) is also smaller. Growing in a spot that receives several hours of afternoon sun, my plant's measurements have been 10x6, 9x5, 12x7, 13x9, 22x10 and 27x17. Mine is a nice enough plant, but it is not Barbara Ann. I suppose it is possibly a TC sport of Barbara Ann. If anyone has a plant with a similar background, I would appreciate hearing about it.

Hmmm...it certainly doesn't look like a "large". I'm not familiar with this one, so can't be of any help to you.

Barbara--How did you get it? Since I posted, someone on the pixlist mentioned that Naylor Creek has it for sale.

A local nursery here has at least 10 of them.

This came in over the winter and I throw it in a plastic bag with some dirt in the dark. Checking on it a little while ago and it was sprouting. So I pulled it out, put it in a pot and let it unfold. I have one spot in my foyer that gets good light - I hope I can keep it going.

That looks a little to green for Barbara Ann to me. Perhaps it's the light on the photos my so called Barbera Ann is much bluer.

While getting a couple of photos of this plant today, I noticed it is putting up two flower scapes. (Hmmm, is that redundant - should it just be "two scapes" or does it matter?)

Ed... That's a beauty, whatever it is! I love the veins in the leaves. Where are you getting such pretty hostas like this in the middle of the winter?

This is a rarity. Usually the things I get in real late in the season are totally dormant.

Sometimes I will bring in a pot from the yard - I have a good sized Fragrant Bouquet that I have forced - looks good in the Spring but bad later in the season. This will probably have the same problem - but it's nice now and the flowers will be nice if they develop.

Ed, do the hostas you bring indoor allways look bad later in the summer ?
Mine have never done that. Fact in August they look like other hostas from the same family.
Climate thing ?
One thing I have never done due to a warning, when I first started, is to bring in the same hosta the next year.

The leaves won't be as tough and I have a big problem with sunburn. Normally Fragrant Bouquet has no problem with the sun.

Here is Barbara Ann yesterday with an azalea I bought at Sam's Club for Valentine's Day. The azalea is 4 intertwined thin branches -- 3 have two-toned ruffled pink flowers while the fourth is just ruffled pink. Looks pretty now but will be a real mess when I have to try to plant it.

Just an update on this plant. I was away all last week and put all my inside plants out into the garage where there is more humidity. I had my children water them a couple of times. When I got home on Sunday the Barbara Ann buds had started to open.

That plant on the left is a longipes hypoglauca with a flower scape that is just opening its flowers. That plant has been under a light in my basement from the end of last season - it was never dormant.
