Congratulations, Josh! Very nice article in the newest Hosta Journal!

I definitely agree on Frosted Jade. We've got it in several places in our gardens, in various stages of growth. It took several years for even the 'frost' to be really eye catching as well. Now it really stands out.

I loved your photos especially of Rosedale Dough Boy!!!! I would never have passed on that one if I had seen your picture.

Hope to see more articles!

I didn't even know the Journal was out, yet...I hope mine shows up soon!!

Rosedale DB looks like crap this year...he got hit by frost bad.

Bob Olson cornered me at the Midwest Convention last month and encouraged me to keep writing...I just have to come up with some good, "fresh" topics.

Any ideas???

Mine came today, and I've already read most of it. I'll be going back over it again to pick up the things I missed on the first run-through. It's too hot outside to garden, so reading the Journal is a good alternative!
Nice article Josh, and a great topic. That could almost become a regular column somewhere, or you could start an Ugly Duckling of the Month club.
There's also an answer in the Q&A from katails.
I also loved the article by Bob Olson about the gardens he has visited in the past, especially the ones in Dubuque.

Josh,

I agree with Linda P 'The Ugly Duckling' thing could become a regular 'tripicka' column in the 'Hosta Journal'. Good job! Great photos too. Did you take those also?

I had the very same experince with 'Frosted Jade'. It just sat there looking like every other narrow white margin hosta then about year 5 - Walla! a beautiful (swan) plant showed its true characteristics. The elongated leaves are so unique except being the exact same as 'Jade Cascade'.

I remember being in awe of the first mature "Jade Cascade' I ever saw. It's an awesome plant and it's all GREEN! - could have been included in your previous writtings. I so enjoyed your 'Plain Green' article. You are truly a man after my own heart.

I've only read 3 articles in the Journal so far. all were very well written and pertinently of interest to shade gardeners. Great Job by all involved!

I'm wishing I had a fancier camera so I could get in on the photo contest.

I thought your article was good, too, Josh. And I agree that you should write more. It is hard to imagine these plants looking so different in 5 years. In the young stages, so many hostas look alike.

Marlys - I 'm glad to see your post on Frosted Jade - I've had it for ~3 years now and have thought it a dud! So I will give it a couple more and hope to see that mine turns from ugly ducking to swan... your post just saved it from being yanked!

You won't be sorry you spared Frosted Jade's life! It is a wonderful plant! A standout in the garden when it finally 'grows up'.

Other hostas are disappointing at maturity. The ones I can think of right now are Pizzazz & Sugar Daddy.

Maybe Josh should write about duds too! His new column could be titled "What I Want To Be When I Grow Up"

Sounds like I really need Frosted Jade...if it has the same form as Jade Cascade I will just LOVE it!

I had a similar experience with Lime Piecrust. It sat there for four years, barely growing or increasing and it was BORING. Couldn’t tell it from an immature August Moon except for its slightly greener color. Very disappointing...until this year!!! It came up big, bold and stunning with wonderful piecrusting. A massive growth spurt caused it to try shoving a 106-eye Gold Standard out of its way!!! Had to move it in a hurry. I am just amazed (and thrilled) with how totally different it is this year!

I received my Journal yesterday. There are some very interesting articles!

I did take the pictures of Reptilian and Rosedale Dough Boy, Marlys. Seeing my words in print is exciting, but I am more excited to see my pictures

The photo contest caught my attention, too. It's probably too late to take any "award winning" photos this year, but I'll be digging through my photos from earlier this year and years past to see what I can find!
