Pic of the Day--Brave Amherst

Post by Hank Zumach »

Hi All-- Almost all of the plants I have been showing recently were purchased in 2002 when Shady Oaks decided to sell off it's inventory to the retail trade at wholesale prices. Kim Larsen generously offered to pick up plants for me.

Today's variety, Brave Amherst, probably has the best blue coloring of the 60 or so varieties we added to the garden that year. It also has had one of the best growth rates. Getting a couple of hours of afternoon sun, Brave Amherst has had measurements of 14x5, 27x11, 37x15, 39x19, 51x19 and 53x21. That makes it an almost perfect match with Zilis' listing of 50x20. However, as is often the case, there is confusion in hostadom. Here is the description taken from the Hosta Library: 'Brave Amherst' is another Lachman introduction. A clump easily reaches 25 x 18" although it is not a rapid grower. The 25" bloom scapes hold nearly white flowers which appear early in the season. The leaves are dark green with a 1/2 to 1" creamy white margin.

This is a very beautiful hosta, though not particularly vigorous. Takes it a few years in a spot to start making headway. But once established, WOW.

ps - seems to like heavy shade vs. partial (for me)
