Pic of the Day--Hanky Panky

Post by Hank Zumach »

Hi All--Like a lot of hostaholics, I occasionally want to get a particular variety based strictly on its name. That was the case with today's variety, Hanky Panky. I mean, what's not to love about a name like that. :D So, when I received the plant as a gift this summer (thanks again, Jim), I was not that concerned about what the plant would look like. It turns out that Hanky Panky should be one of the most interesting, attractive plants in our collection. Hanky Panky is a sport of Strip Tease and will develop a color pattern of green leaves with a gold border and a thin white strip between them. I'm afraid that my plant had to go through some tough weather after being planted and it looks rather rough in the photo. But just wait until next year!! Hanky Panky should be about 36 inches wide at maturity, about twice the size of 16x7 that the plant measured this year.

Hanky Panky is probably the most interesting new entry of the last years and it fully deserves all interest it gets.
It's one of my favourites

Thanks for the photo, Sugar. That's what I'm expecting my plant to look like next year.

Hank, thanks for the information on this one. I just got a call on my cell phone from a friend who was at a garden center that had hostas 40% off and she was reading off names. Guess what :D one was Hanky Panky and I told her to pick it up for me. Will get it Monday after work. Cell phones sure come in handy with hosta friends.
Thanks,
Sue

Some shots of my Hanky Panky plants during the season.
Some early season shots. This first has a hint of gray on the center which is odd.

Here's another sprintime shot of HP. Also planted in 2010. My HP gets lots of afternoon sun, although planted under spruce trees.

I acquired 'Hanky Panky' in 2013 but it was a very small division. It has grown a lot since then. I probably need to find a location with more light for it.

Here are a few photos of mine. It looks like I have been dividing it the way it breaks in pieces but it has sat there in place for about 7 years.

The final shot is today - usually I never have late summer photos of hostas - usually they look like celery stalks when we return from MI. Now I had better get out and catch up on a summer of weeding!
