Pic of the Day--Jewel of the Nile

Post by Hank Zumach »

Hi All--Jewel of the Nile is a sport of Dee's Golden Jewel. Apparently there is a very good chance that if you get Jewel of the Nile you will also eventually end up with a Dee's Golden Jewel. That's because Jewel of the Nile has a strong tendency to revert back to its sport parent. That's OK for those of use who don't mind doing the occasional division. It also has the not very common characteristic of an irregular, almost streaky, variegation pattern.

Jewel of the Nile has done well in the shade of our Friendship Garden although it has had some unexpected problems with critters eating the leaves since the variety is described as having good substance. The plant has measured 22x9 and 27x10, on its way to an expected upright form of about 24x28.

Ohhh
I love it for being beautiful...and unstabile :D

Some years we just have big critters
Against stupidity the gods themselves struggle in vain.

Hank,

You're sure right about JOTN reverting. I have two 2 yr. old plants and both had yellow eyes (which I removed, replanted and labeled Dee's Golden Jewel). At this rate, will my JOTN ever get large?
