Pic of the Day--Warwick Delight

Hi All--In our collection of a little over 300 varieties, Warwick Delight has the distinction of being the only one that has never grown beyond its original single eye. As a non-biologist, I find that rather remarkable. I guess I would have thought such a plant would have given up and died by now, since we have had it since 1999. Each year Warwick Delight has started out as a very attractive, striking little thing and then it has slowly started to deteriorate and by late season it is ragged and torn. Over those 9 years in our garden its size has bounced between 7x5 and 5x3.

The first photo, from August of 2003, shows the plant in its best year. The second photo, from late June of 2007, is more typical.

I would be VERY interested in hearing what others have experienced. It's quite high on my wish list, but if that is typical, I will likely downgrade it.

This plant was offered by Walters Gardens a few years back and we started some and sold a few. The first year in pots they did fine and were nice looking plants, but once they hit the ground they were very slow to return. One plant out of 20 finally multiplied and was looking like a nice little clump... and then never returned after last winter

We have a solid green sport from them, though, and as you would expect it grows great. After so many people asked what that plant was we decided to give it a name and register it. Brian named it H. 'Heart's Delight'.

ViolaAnn, I think you can take this one off your wish list. There are better white centered plants out there.

I have much the same experience as Chris with this plant. We do have one that is still with us, but I wouldn't say it is thriving. Every year I expect it to not return, but it has so far.

I agree with Chris, ViolaAnn...drop it way down on the list!
