Pic of the Day--Fascination

Post by Hank Zumach »

Hi All--Today variety, Fascination, has some uncommon characteristics. It is one of only a few varieties that I am aware of being sold that has unstable variegation. If left alone, as my plant has been, the plant will gradually lose its variegation and become all solid green. You can see this happening in the pix, taken in 2002, 2004, and 2007. I got the plant in 2000. Another uncommon trait is that the plant will produce some variegated seedlings although it is not used as much now as it was in the past. Having a condition known as "laziness", I have not done the necessary dividing to maintain the plant's variegated eyes nor have I used the seeds for growing.

I do like the plant. It has nice foliage, variegated or not, a good growth rate and slugs have not shown an interest. Starting in 2001 the plant has measured 16x9, 26x12, 38x19, 48x20, 53x21, 55x25 and 61x24. Zilis lists it at 50x18.

Fascination today - I don't think I have seen any plain green eyes on this plant - then again it's never gotten very big.
