Anyone up for hosta ID'ing?

Talk about hostas, hostas, and more hostas! Companion plant topics should be posted in the Shade Garden forum.

Anyone up for hosta ID'ing?

Post by gardner4eternity »

Hello Everyone

I have been absent from Hallson's forums for several years due to work and helping to take care of my granddaughter who is now five.

The gardens have been neglected and now that I can finally spend some time in them I'm immobilized for the next 5 weeks due to a muscle tear in my lower leg. So, since I can't work in the gardens I thought I'd get a start on ID'ing many of my hosta that have lost their tags over the years.

Is anyone up for the challenge of helping me ID a few, or a lot of hostas? I could post pics along with my list of close to 300 hostas I've collected over the last eight years, which would probably help the ID process.

If not, I totally understand....there's gardening to do!

Thanks

Sandy

Hi, I'm always up for pics, but ID'ing is a challenge for me.

I'd love to see some of your hostas however.

Nice to hear from you, Sandy. There are days I'm not sure what my own name is  , but I'll help if I can!

Thanks Everyone!

I've been having trouble logging in...I've tried coming in thru IE instead of AOL...let's see if this post shows up.

If it does, that's good, but I can't see any images...only little x's.

Geesh!

Ok, here's the list....

Post by gardner4eternity »

Here's the list of what I've acquired over the years...some have died from years of drought. This year however, I've had a few plants reappear after several years absence. I think it was due to the constant snow cover this past winter and the abundant rain this year! I'll post pics as I find time to snap them---kind of hard hobbling around with one good leg. And we've got a rain/cold front coming thru...but maybe I'll try and snap a few before it starts pouring. I really appreciate the help in ID'ing, and its good to be back!

Haven't a clue....stunted in size because of being overshadowed by other hosta. Probably 5 years old...

Hi Sandy!

The first one looks like Radiant Edger to me.

The second looks like Whirlwind.

The third looks like Royal Flush.

Nothing comes to mind for the others, so they might not be things I've grown, but hopefully others recognize them :)

The 4th one might be your Lakeside Waterfall, the 5th does look like Spinach Patch.

That's quite a list. Are they ALL unidentified? It would help if you could eliminate some of the names. And as we identify them you ARE going to label them ASAP aren't you?

One other question. Were some of them wet when photographed? If you can try really hard to take your pics on an overcast day and of dry leaves it helps a lot in the process. The other thing is something in the pic to give us an idea of scale if possible.

Fire away. I'm always up for a challenge.

MYSTIA.JPG looks a lot like my Grand Tiara.

I wasn't so sure about the one Chris ID'd as Whirlwind, thinking there's too much plain white in the leaf, but when I look at the pic of mine at this time of year it IS similar.

MYS3.JPG - what colour are the petioles? And did it start out this colour?

Since you say the first one is a tiara, I would say it may be Grand Tiara. The second looks like a Great Expectations. I have one that looks like this and I just moved it.

First one could be GRAND TIARA, as suggested, or GLEN TIARA, not sure what the difference is...and I grow both!

But both of those TIARA's seem to have more well-defined centers than your photo.

MYSTIA sure reminds me of 'Grand Tiara' when grown in complete shade, or quite early in the season.

MYS1 looks like what I have as 'Morning Light' which I found to be prone to burn-out and a poor grower to boot. Not quite sure why I persevere with it...
