Opinion on H. 'Aristocrat'

Post by R. Rock »

Hello,
What is your experience w/ this one. The specimans I have observed become really tattered in summmer. Could it be placement and water? Perhaps, it is the interior growing faster than the wide edge causing it to split?
Thanks

I keep mine in full shade and it does great. I really love the coloration on this one. Now, mine isn't huge because I had to move it a couple of times for work we had done on the house, but it is nicely shaped.

Gee, I've never had that problem with Aristocrat. Mine is in quite a shady location, but it has never tattered like Brim Cup, for example, which I have had terrible luck with... even in full shade. I do water frequently, however. Maybe you could try moving it.

I"ve not had a problem with mine, but it's only 5 years old. I do keep it in full shade. My daughter has one that is probably 6 or 7, and it has never had a problem with tattered edges either. Could this be one of those 'bad batch of tissue culture' scenarios?
This pic is from 3 years ago...seems I don't have a later one.

Mine has never gotten really big, but I've never had the problem with the edges either.

But I do recall that someone on here always refers to it as 'Aristocrap' whenever there's a post about poor performers.

It is painfully slow to grow but I do not recall ever seeing it look scruffy.

Ours always looks great. I get a lot of people requesting one based on it. It is in full shade as well.

I have never had any problem with Aristocrat. I also grow it in a fair amount of shade. This plant is about 8 years old:

My 'Aristocrat' was new in 2004 and divided to share in 2006. Moved at the end of the 2006 season to the east side of my house. The previous location was too shady and it does very well in the new location. There are a couple of pics at: http://violaann.smugmug.com/Garden/Host ... 61_bLwdx/2

It's never been a fast grower, but it never gets tatty either and I've been very pleased with it.

Aristocrat, tattered?! never. Are you sure you don't have Wide Brim or another of the lookalikes? Aristocrat is a cast iron plant, not the fastest or largest grower, but always gorgeous till the bitter end of summer, except for the occasional rabbit-predated leaf. Honestly, I'm as surprised as the rest here ....

had it in the same spot for lots of years... slow and never lived up to its hype... and even in deep shade, some years its been very tattered, other years margins are fine... nice look, but not on my winner list...

Hmmm..... so far the 2 who have seen tattered edges are from the same Twin Cities area. I can't imagine that growing conditions there would be responsible although I guess they could be... Makes me wonder if there was an inferior batch of TCs that went to that area... :hmm:

I think I got 20 of them from Walters way back when... the few I kept and grew on just didn't grow very well... really could be genetic. As far as the margins... I've got wide brims that never get tattered... even have a Brim Cup that I keep (near the Aristocrat) because it looks good most years. But later in the season, Aristocrat just always ends up looking old... and sometimes looks very tattered...

Looked in my files for a pic of Aristocrat, but don't have one to show you. However, mine always looks good, right to the end of the season. Don't know how to explain the discrepancies that we're finding here. Phyllis

I have kept Aristocrat in a pot for years. It is such an elegant hosta, IMHO and one of my favorites. I don't have any trouble with it except its leaves get dirtier than most.
Darn I thought I had a photo.
